Job description
COMPANY OVERVIEW:The Globe and Mail is a national icon and one of Canada's most recognized media brands. We proudly serve as a trusted destination for Canadians seeking the highest caliber of journalism, and we've garnered international acclaim for our data visualization, design, and creative storytelling.

We are committed to fostering diversity and inclusivity by reflecting all Canadians in both the stories that we tell and the composition of our workforce. We are proud partners with organizations like Indigenous Works, Pride at Work, the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion, and we are a signatory of the BlackNorth Initiative. Recognizing the importance of work-life balance, we offer flexible work arrangements and support programs. We also invest in our employees' growth through training and mentorship opportunities, enabling you to expand your skills and embrace new challenges.

No matter your position at The Globe, you'll be an integral part of an organization dedicated to making a positive difference in Canada. Join us.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Globe and Mail is seeking a Deputy Editor to help build and deliver the Intelligence Unit, a new editorial franchise focused on Canada's most pressing long-term challenges and opportunities. The intelligence unit will undertake a limited number of major projects each year, combining rigorous reporting with expert analysis and national debate.

Working closely with the Intelligence Unit Editor, the Deputy Editor will help coordinate ambitious, solutions-oriented journalism that draws on expertise from both inside and outside the newsroom. This includes working with leading academics, researchers, business leaders, public-policy experts and other specialists to deepen The Globe's coverage of major national issues.

The role is ideal for an editor who excels at shaping complex ideas into compelling journalism and who is energized by explanatory reporting that helps readers understand not only what is happening, but what might be done about it. Topics could range from housing and productivity to health care, education, demographic change, energy, artificial intelligence and geopolitics.

The Deputy Editor will play a central role in helping the Intelligence Unit deliver on its ambitions.

This is a 2-year contract position .

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Commission and edit high-impact journalism focused on Canada's defining issues.
  • Work closely with reporters, contributors and external subject-matter experts.
  • Help shape reporting that examines causes, consequences, policy options and potential solutions.
  • Coordinate complex editorial projects across multiple platforms and formats.
  • Support the delivery of analysis, reporting and debate components for each flagship project.
  • Collaborate with audience, product, data, visuals and event teams.
  • Maintain exceptional editorial standards, accuracy and clarity.
  • Help develop new storytelling formats, expert-driven content and editorial products that strengthen the Intelligence Unit's impact.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least five years of strong, senior editing experience at a major publication or newsroom
  • Demonstrated editorial judgment and attention to detail
  • Expertise in long-form, explanatory or enterprise journalism
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Interest in public policy, business and societal issues
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills

This position is based in the Toronto office and requires a minimum of two days a week in office.

APPLICATION: Please include a cover letter, with three links to your previous work, along with your resume (that is written by you, not AI). Our promise to readers is that the best work comes from our own (human) curiosity and creativity - we'd like to see yours.

SALARY: This position is classified as an Assistant Editor in Group AA of the Editorial Collective Agreement .

WHY CHOOSE THE GLOBE: The Globe's mission is to deliver essential content - news, information, analysis and insights - for aspiring individuals and strong communities. The Globe is committed to providing a respectful and inclusive workplace that upholds our values of integrity, collaboration, innovation and accountability.

As Canada's most respected media brand, The Globe is dedicated to making a difference to Canada and you can make a difference by working with us.

WE OFFER:
  • Competitive compensation to ensure we hire, retain and reward team members
  • Hybrid work environment that promotes work-life balance
  • Generous vacation and flexible work arrangements
  • Parental leave top-up
  • Competitive health and dental benefits
  • Defined Benefit pension plan
  • Annual wellness subsidy
  • On-site chiropractor and registered massage therapist
  • Employee and family assistance program
  • Free digital subscription to globeandmail.com and 40% off other Globe products
  • Education assistance for external training courses

SUPPORTING YOUR GROWTH:

  • We are committed to creating equitable opportunities for all employees, to enable everyone to reach their full potential. This commitment is embedded in our strategic plan and core values.
  • There are lateral and upward advancement opportunities for rewarding and developing careers.
  • We believe in mentorship and collaborative peer-to-peer learning and have both formal and informal programs in place to encourage knowledge-sharing.
  • We support continuing education and provide both internal and external opportunities for training and development.

AI DISCLOSURE: Artificial intelligence tools may be used to support certain aspects of the recruitment process, such as candidate sourcing or application review. All employment decisions, including interview selection and hiring outcomes, are made by human reviewers. We ask candidates to engage authentically in interviews; AI may support preparation but should not be used during interviews or replace your own responses.

THE GLOBE AND MAIL IS DEDICATED TO DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN THE WORKPLACE

The Globe and Mail is committed to fostering an inclusive, accessible work environment, where all employees feel valued, respected and supported. We believe this strengthens our business and our journalism. We welcome and encourage applications from individuals from all groups, regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, religion, socio-economic status, age, and physical ability. As required by the Federal Contractors Program, The Globe also tracks the proportion of staff in the four Employment Equity categories (Women, Aboriginal Peoples, Persons with Disabilities, and Members of Visible Minorities) to ensure we are reflecting the areas in which we work.
