Description of the Position

The Director, Granting & Donor Impact is responsible for planning, organizing and directing the activities of the organization with respect to the Foundation’s granting activities, donor fund management, and enabling the Foundation’s donor data quality. Collectively, these efforts will seek to optimize the impact of donor contributions in order to improve the donor experience, deepen and extend relationships with donors, and to maximize the Foundation’s impact through supporting the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and paediatric health charities across Canada. The Director reports to the Vice-President, Donor Experience & Impact.

You will:

Granting:

  • Lead all aspects of the Foundation's grant making operations, including Hospital funding, national grant competitions, and external granting initiatives, ensuring efficient processes, robust governance, and an exceptional stakeholder experience through the Granting & Hospital Relations team.
  • Drive the Foundation's granting strategy, overseeing the allocation of funds to advance the Hospital's strategic priorities while ensuring compliance with donor intent and organizational policies.
  • Work collaboratively across Foundation teams to review and assess restricted fundraising to limit acceptance of restricted donations which cannot reasonably be used, or used in a reasonable period of time, by identified grantees.
  • Champion the effective management and utilization of charitable funding, working collaboratively across Foundation and Hospital teams to optimize funding outcomes, drive impact, and support long-term institutional goals.
  • Lead the implementation and ongoing oversight of efforts to improve and optimize timelines for spending restricted funds raised, including the ongoing implementation of the Joint Foundation Hospital Restricted Funds Policy (JFRFP).
  • Identify and lead the implementation of process and/or technology-enabled improvements to granting in order to maximize the velocity and/or quality of restricted fund grants.
  • Establish and collaborate with Business Intelligence & Information Technology (BIIT) team to deliver reports to measure and communicate key metrics and reports related to granting activity and impact, to provide visibility and support accountability across the organization from prospecting and fundraising through to donor impact storytelling.
  • Resolve granting questions or issues. Proactively advise on complex donor-facing granting scenarios such as delayed fund utilization.
  • Consult with Foundation’s Legal, Stewardship and Donor Relations, and Development teams and the Hospital’s Director of Foundation Relations to ensure gift agreements accurately reflect the agreed upon terms by all interested parties, including the Hospital, Foundation and Donor.
  • Work proactively with Hospital stakeholders to increase awareness of monies available, and to provide advice and solutions regarding appropriate spending plans.

Donor Impact:

  • Oversee the monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of grant-funded initiatives, ensuring Hospital-funded programs meet agreed-upon program deliverables, milestones, and reporting obligations. Ensure program outcomes can be translated into meaningful impact for donors, management, working with the Writing and Stewardship teams to demonstrate the value and results of philanthropic investment.
  • Champion and lead cross-functional teams to deliver on exceptional fund management related to complex gifts and/or funds.
  • Consult on priority proposals to ensure alignment between restricted funds raised and ability to grant effectively and efficiently.
  • Work together with the Director, Donor Experience in the definition and measurement of Donor Experience KPIs related to tracking and measuring the impact of donor contributions.
  • Serve as a champion for measuring and demonstrating donor impact (for both unrestricted and restricted contributions) across the Foundation and Hospital.

Donor Data Quality:

  • In close collaboration with BIIT teams, including CRM leadership and Data Steward, serve as a Business Lead for Donor Data Quality. In order to ensure the accuracy, integrity, consistency and completeness of donor and fund data, support an industry-leading donor experience, and optimize the impact of donor funds raised for the Hospital and other paediatric health charities.
  • Collaborate with Philanthropy/Development, Marketing, Stewardship and Finance (including Gift Admin) teams to understand donor data needs, pain points, and address data quality issues.
  • Look holistically at donor data challenges across segments (mass donors, relationship managed, Corporate, etc) and in collaboration with BIIT, develop and implement strategies to maintain and improve donor data quality across relevant platforms and databases including data completeness accuracy and ease of access.
  • Champion activities to improve donor data quality, including both donor profile data and donor restricted funds data. Lead, champion or support priority projects (e.g. efforts to address holding funds, tribute funds, etc.) to address current data gaps and inconsistencies.
  • Support Data Governance initiatives, supporting data quality standards and supporting processes. Lead or support priority cross-functional projects including clarifying roles/responsibilities across the Foundation for CRM / donor profile data entry and management of restricted funds data.
  • Establish and monitor data quality metrics and, in collaboration with BIIT, provide regular reports and insights to senior management.
  • Support BIIT-led initiatives around data privacy and/or security, data analytics and insight.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Develop effective communications for stakeholders and business sponsors.
  • Coach and support direct reports and their teams in delivering successfully against their roles’ accountabilities and pursuing their career goals. Foster a continuous improvement and innovation mindset.
  • Budget oversight: Oversee and manage the budget for granting and data quality teams, ensuring accurate forecasting and responsible financial management.
  • Lead and/or participate on a number of cross organizational teams/projects.
  • Ensure key granting systems, processes and any potential risks are documented.
  • Work closely with the Foundation’s Campaign Team and the Foundation’s and Hospital’s senior leadership teams to ensure there is a strategic alignment between the Hospital’s priorities and the philanthropic activities of SickKids Foundation.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years progressive leadership experience in the charitable sector with a focus on grant making.
  • A proven track record as a skilled leader.
  • Working knowledge of foundation/hospital operations, specifically granting.
  • Understanding of general and fund accounting principles.
  • Knowledge of charitable sector regulation and industry guidelines.
  • Ability to work with and influence senior members of Hospital and Foundation communities.
  • Conflict management, negotiation and consensus building skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and consider Foundation-wide objectives while managing competing priorities.
  • Strong analytical and reasoning skills, with a meticulous attention to detail.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Familiarity with CRM platforms and basic familiarity with database marketing regulations (e.g., CASL).
  • Understanding of donor data quality principles, methodologies and tools.
  • Proven track record at optimizing and enhancing processes to maximize efficiency.
  • Inquisitive nature, and ability to quickly learn and understand complex concepts.

Total Compensation Package

Hiring Salary Rang e: $132,767.00 – $165,958.00; with the ability to progress to a maximum of $190,853.00 with demonstrated experience and proficiency. To ensure fair and equitable pay at SickKids Foundation, placement on the salary range will be based on your years of experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the Director, Granting & Donor Impact.
