Job description

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Our client is a purpose-driven consulting organization dedicated to advancing the shift toward a sustainable, low-carbon energy economy. For more than two decades, they have partnered with governments, utilities, corporations, and other organizations across North America to support impactful energy transition initiatives.

Their team consists of over 60 highly skilled professionals who combine technical excellence with a collaborative, supportive, and mission-oriented culture. The organization brings together specialists in areas such as energy systems, buildings, transportation, and industrial decarbonization, alongside experienced consultants who help clients translate complex analysis into practical policies, programs, and market strategies.

As a member of the team, you may contribute to evaluating large-scale decarbonization opportunities, designing policies and programs that encourage adoption of clean energy solutions, and assessing the effectiveness of those initiatives to support ongoing improvement.

Beyond meaningful work, the organization is committed to fostering employee growth and well-being. Team members benefit from challenging and intellectually rewarding work, opportunities for professional advancement, competitive compensation, and a culture that values work-life balance. The company recognizes that long-term success depends on maintaining a healthy, engaged, and continuously developing workforce.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The successful candidate will bring 10+ years of relevant experience and a demonstrated history of leading complex initiatives involving electricity system planning, market analysis, policy development, and regulatory matters.

This individual combines deep technical knowledge with strong analytical, strategic, communication, and leadership capabilities. They can provide practical, evidence-based recommendations to utilities, system operators, regulators, governments, and other stakeholders throughout North America, particularly where electricity planning, decarbonization, policy, and implementation intersect.

You are an effective leader who can communicate clearly, navigate ambiguity, and solve problems pragmatically. You are motivated by helping shape decisions that support a reliable, affordable, and low-carbon energy future. You can comfortably move between high-level strategic discussions and detailed technical considerations, guiding multidisciplinary teams while relying on subject-matter experts for specialized analysis.

You are passionate about supporting both the decarbonization and expansion of electricity systems, alongside the growth of clean fuels, to enable broader economy-wide emissions reductions across transportation, buildings, industry, and digital infrastructure.

Required Qualifications

● Minimum 10 years of professional experience within the energy sector

● Strong knowledge of Canadian electricity systems and familiarity with U.S. power markets

● Comprehensive understanding of electricity-sector regulations, policy frameworks, technologies, market trends, and industry practices

● Experience with utility planning processes, including Integrated Resource Planning (IRP), bulk system planning, and related industry methodologies

● Experience leading or overseeing sophisticated electricity system modeling projects involving areas such as load forecasting, capacity expansion, production cost modeling, reliability assessments, and financial analysis

● Strong understanding of electricity-sector decarbonization pathways and the impacts of electrification across sectors

● Proven project leadership experience on medium- to large-scale engagements, including team direction, risk management, quality assurance, and stakeholder coordination

● Ability to guide technical teams, challenge assumptions, and interpret analytical findings without necessarily conducting all modeling activities directly

● Experience applying rigorous QA/QC practices to technical analyses and client-facing deliverables

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical information into concise, actionable insights

Preferred Qualifications

● Consulting experience, including proposal preparation and strategic client advisory services

● Experience managing key client relationships and serving as an account lead

● Knowledge of transmission planning processes and associated modeling tools

● Experience in load forecasting, interregional planning, and integrated multi-fuel or economy-wide energy planning

● Familiarity with building, transportation, and industrial decarbonization strategies

● Understanding of distributed energy resources (DERs) and grid integration considerations

● Knowledge of electricity market design, including energy, capacity, and ancillary service markets

● Established professional relationships with Canadian utilities, regulators, system operators, or government organizations

● French-language communication skills*

*This role requires regular interaction with colleagues and clients across Canada and potentially internationally, including individuals who may communicate primarily in English and, in some cases, French.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to and lead strategic projects for utilities, governments, regulators, system operators, and other energy-sector stakeholders throughout Canada and the United States.

The organization's work frequently supports critical decisions related to energy transition planning, infrastructure investments, market evolution, and public policy. Projects may include Integrated Resource Plans (IRPs), resource adequacy studies, reliability assessments, market forecasting, and long-term energy system planning.

Key responsibilities include:

Project Leadership

● Direct and manage major electricity-sector projects as a Project Manager or Project Director

● Oversee project execution, client communications, team coordination, analytical direction, and quality assurance

● Lead development of reports, presentations, and other client deliverables

Client Advisory

● Serve as a trusted advisor to senior decision-makers

● Support clients in evaluating complex strategic and operational issues

● Present findings and recommendations in a clear, practical, and decision-focused manner

Methodology & Analysis

● Collaborate with technical experts to establish project methodologies and analytical frameworks

● Ensure approaches are transparent, defensible, and appropriately balanced between rigor and practicality

Business Development

● Lead proposal development efforts and respond to client procurement opportunities

● Identify emerging market needs and pursue new business opportunities aligned with organizational strengths

Team Development

● Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment

● Mentor colleagues and contribute technical guidance when needed

● Support knowledge sharing and continuous professional development across the organization

BENEFITS

The organization offers a competitive compensation package along with a comprehensive suite of benefits, including flexible work arrangements, health and dental coverage, retirement savings contributions, public transit and bike-share incentives, and additional employee supports.

Professional development is a core priority. Employees have access to dedicated learning time, training budgets, structured development goals, numerous educational lunch-and-learn sessions throughout the year, and a strong culture of curiosity and knowledge exchange.

Managers are actively engaged in supporting employee growth through mentoring, constructive feedback, and opportunities to work on a variety of projects aligned with individual interests and career objectives.

While the work can be fast-paced, the organization is committed to minimizing overtime and maintaining a culture where evenings and weekends are generally reserved for personal time.

LOCATION

This position may be based in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, or remotely from elsewhere in Canada.

Employees located near one of the company’s offices are encouraged to take advantage of a hybrid work arrangement that combines in-office collaboration with the flexibility of working from home.
