Job description

At Gore Mutual, we’ve always set ourselves apart as a modern mutual that does good. Now, we’re proudly building on that legacy to transform our company—and our industry—for the better.

Effective January 1, 2026, Gore has joined Beneva—the country’s largest mutual insurance company—as part of its Property & Casualty operations in Ontario and Western Canada. During 2026, Gore will combine its operations with Unica Insurance, Beneva’s Ontario‑based subsidiary specializing in niche commercial and personal insurance, creating a stronger, more diversified mutual insurer with greater scale and long‑term stability.

Every decision and investment remains anchored in long‑term benefits to customers, members, and communities. Come join us.

What you will do

The Personal Property Advisor is essential to Gore Mutual's success, acting as a safeguard of both customer trust and financial stability. The role demands a blend of meticulous investigation, collaborative problem‑solving, and decisive action within defined guidelines. Advisors independently manage a portfolio of primary personal property claims, navigating a spectrum of complexity, investigating, evaluating, negotiating, and settling these claims while adhering to company protocols and regulations. By thoroughly assessing losses, determining accurate coverage, and efficiently resolving claims, they contribute directly to Gore Mutual's bottom line and build lasting relationships with policyholders.

Claims Investigation and Assessment

  • Conduct thorough and timely investigations of personal property losses
  • Gather evidence to determine cause of loss, scope of damage, and applicable coverage
  • Document findings accurately and clearly in the claim file
  • Collaborate with experts (engineers, contractors, etc.) as needed

Coverage Determination and Reserve Setting

  • Analyze policy wordings and endorsements to determine coverage applicability and set accurate reserves based on investigation findings
  • Apply knowledge of personal property insurance principles and legal requirements
  • Consult with senior advisors or underwriters for complex coverage issues
  • Review and adjust reserves regularly as new information becomes available

Negotiation and Settlement

  • Negotiate fair and equitable settlements with claimants, balancing customer satisfaction with cost containment for Gore Mutual
  • Explain coverage decisions clearly and professionally to claimants
  • Use effective negotiation techniques to reach mutually agreeable settlements
  • Escalate complex or high‑value settlements to senior advisors or management appropriately

Customer Service and Communication

  • Provide exceptional customer service throughout the claims process, maintaining open and transparent communication with all stakeholders
  • Manage customer expectations and address concerns within established guidelines
  • Respond promptly to inquiries and provide regular updates on claim status
  • Explain claims processes and procedures to policyholders and brokers
  • Build rapport and trust with claimants to facilitate a positive claims experience
  • Escalate complaints or sensitive issues to senior advisors or management

Risk Mitigation and Continuous Improvement

  • Identify trends and potential risks related to personal property claims, contributing to ongoing risk mitigation and process improvement efforts
  • Participate in post‑loss reviews and team discussions to share insights and lessons learned
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes and enhance efficiency
  • Stay informed about industry developments and regulatory changes that may impact claims handling

What you need to succeed

  • 3‑5+ years of property claims adjusting experience (preferred)
  • Post secondary education (preferred)
  • Customer service experience – proven ability to communicate effectively with claimants, brokers, and other stakeholders in a professional and empathetic manner
  • Experience using claims management systems – proficiency with software like Guidewire or similar platforms is beneficial for efficient claims handling

Skills required for the role

  • In‑depth knowledge of personal property insurance principles and practices, including policy wordings, coverage options, exclusions, and legal requirements
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, ability to assess complex situations, gather relevant information, and make sound decisions based on facts and evidence
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills, clear and concise communication with various stakeholders
  • Effective negotiation skills to achieve fair settlements that meet the needs of both the policyholder and the insurer
  • Detail‑oriented and organized – ability to manage multiple claims simultaneously and maintain accurate records
  • Proficiency in using technology – comfortable with claims management systems, Microsoft Office suite, and other relevant software
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, balancing individual responsibilities with collaboration
  • Strong time‑management and prioritization skills, effectively prioritizing workload based on urgency and importance
  • Adaptability and flexibility to adjust to changing priorities, new information, and unexpected challenges
  • Commitment to continuous learning – willingness to stay informed about industry trends, regulatory changes, and new technologies

Location

This is a hybrid work model that requires 2 days spent in our vibrant Cambridge or Vancouver office.
