JOB SUMMARY

The Energy Engineer – Lighting Systems & Renewable Technologies is the technical authority for the development, engineering, and technical assurance of lighting, lighting controls, solar PV, and related electrical efficiency measures delivered through Ontario utility and IESO-administered energy efficiency programs, including Save on Energy custom and prescriptive pathways, and Blackstone performance contracting models.

This role leads lighting and electrical audits, develops Investment Grade Feasibility Studies (IGFS), and ensures measures are defined in accordance with IESO program rules, baseline and eligibility requirements, codes and standards, and measurement and verification (M&V) protocols. The Engineer provides technical oversight through design development and implementation review to ensure installed systems align with the approved design intent, savings assumptions, and utility incentive documentation.

Note: This role is focused on engineering accountability and design intent assurance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Lighting Audits, Baseline Definition & Compliance Assessment

  • Lead on-site and desktop audits of existing lighting systems, lighting controls, and applicable renewable technologies, including fixture inventories, operating schedules, space use classification, and baseline condition assessments.
  • Provide compliance assessment of current lighting levels to applicable codes and standards (IES, CSA, OBC)

Measure Development & IESO Program Alignment

  • Develop complete, utility-ready measure scopes suitable for Save on Energy prescriptive and custom applications, and ESCO delivery, including:
    • Design intent and basis of design
    • Equipment schedules and technical specifications
    • Control narratives and sequences of operation
    • Commissioning and acceptance criteria
  • Screen and structure measures to meet IESO eligibility rules, applicable codes and standards, baseline definitions, interactive effects treatment, and persistence requirements.

Equipment Specification & Technology Selection

  • Specify and select lighting, lighting controls, and renewable equipment based on:
    • Performance and reliability
    • Applicable codes and standards compliance
    • Maintainability and lifecycle cost
    • Utility program eligibility (e.g., qualified products, control requirements)
  • Coordinate with manufacturers, controls vendors, and specialist consultants to validate technical approach and savings assumptions.

Savings Analysis, Costing & Incentives

  • Develop detailed energy, demand, and operating hour savings calculations consistent with Ontario utility and IESO program methodologies.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and pricing inputs for equipment, installation, commissioning, and M&V using internal tools and validated vendor or subcontractor pricing.
  • Where current lighting levels are non-compliant, ensure measure financial analysis addresses necessary upgrades.
  • Monitor Ontario utility and IESO incentive programs, maintaining current knowledge of:
    • Program rules and changes
    • Application pathways (prescriptive vs. custom)
    • Documentation and inspection requirements
    • Submission timelines and review processes

Incentive & M&V Documentation

  • Prepare and support submission of utility-ready incentive documentation, including:
    • Baseline and post‑retrofit lighting inventories
    • Lighting level measurements and applicable codes and standards compliance confirmation
    • Equipment cut sheets and control descriptions
    • Savings calculations and technical narratives
  • Define appropriate M&V approaches aligned with IESO and ESCO requirements, including:
    • Baseline documentation standards

Design Intent Assurance (IGFS → Implementation)

    • Ensure measures developed in the IGFS are engineered and implemented in accordance with the approved scope and design intent by:
      • Reviewing submittals, shop drawings, and as‑built documentation
      • Reviewing lighting layouts, control zoning, and programmed sequences
      • Reviewing commissioning results and functional performance testing
    • Identify, document, and assess deviations from design intent and evaluate impacts to savings, incentives, maintenance and performance guarantees, where applicable.

    Reporting & Technical Communication

    • Prepare high-quality technical reports, engineering narratives, and presentations for internal approval, client decision-making, and utility review.
    • Clearly document assumptions, exclusions, risks, and compliance considerations associated with utility programs and M&V.

    Additional Duties

    • Support interdepartmental and intercompany initiatives related to energy efficiency, electrification, decarbonization, and renewable energy solutions in Ontario.
    • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of internal engineering standards, calculation tools, templates, and best practices related to lighting, controls, incentives, and M&V.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical or Energy Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of five (5) years of relevant energy engineering experience.
    • P.Eng. designation in the Province of Ontario is required (or the ability to acquire P.Eng. designation).
    • CEM, CMVP, or equivalent.

    ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES

Knowledge: High‑efficiency lighting systems and controls, applicable codes and standards (CSA lighting standards, Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), OBC), electrical systems, solar PV fundamentals, Ontario utility and IESO energy efficiency programs, ESCO performance contracting, and M&V practices.

Skills: Lighting audits and illuminance measurement, baseline definition, equipment specification, savings calculations, utility incentive documentation, M&V planning, technical reporting, and design intent verification.

Attributes: Positive attitude, initiative, strong work ethic, technical leadership, accountability, flexibility, and ability to work collaboratively. Moderate travel required (based on the needs of the role), with a valid driver’s license. Minimum requirement of 3 days a week in a Blackstone office depending on travel requirements.

    What’s in it for you?

    • An opportunity to join a dynamic, fast-paced energy transition company with true climate responsibility impact
    • Competitive salary and total comp package
    • A collaborative, inclusive, solutions-oriented work culture
    • RRSP program with employer match
    • Company-paid extra "Blackstone" days off
    • Fitness Club & Bike Share subsidy
    • A fully funded, employee-focused health benefits plan (including vision care, an extensive Employee & Family Assistance Plan, and enhanced coverages for wellness-based practitioners such as mental health support, massage therapy and others)
    • DEI+B Committee
    • Central midtown Toronto office on the TTC line at Eglinton Station

Blackstone is an equal opportunity employer, providing equal opportunities to employees regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, religion, marital status, or age. We strive to maintain an inclusive culture where everyone feels valued, respected, and heard, and can be their best selves at work. Our commitment to sustainability and climate responsibility is foundational to who we are.
