About the Professor, Indigenous Ways of Knowing in Health and Education:

As part of our commitment to Indigenous Education, and in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (TRC) Calls to Action # 7, 12, 22, 23, and 24, Humber has created a Professor, Indigenous Ways of Knowing in Health and Education role to support the growth and development of culturally safe education and professional practice. As indicated in the TRC Calls to Action, at a baseline level, it is essential that students develop an understanding of determinants that support Indigenous peoples’ health and wellness including culturally responsive strengths-based interventions and culturally safe care. This requires students to move beyond baseline awareness of historical/contemporary impacts of colonialism to a recognition of systems-based strengths and inadequacies and interventions that address health inequities experienced by Indigenous peoples.

While teaching predominantly in the Early Childhood Education and Nursing programs, the successful candidate may develop curriculum and teach courses or modules within a variety of programs within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The position will add breadth to the faculty’s current course offerings focusing broadly on Indigenous Studies, Indigenous Determinants of Health, and/or Indigenous Cultures, Pedagogies, Histories, and Contemporary Experiences, while also supporting the development of new aligned curricula. The successful candidate will have experience effectively weaving Indigenous ways of being, knowing and doing in the classroom, as well as demonstrated capacity to build and/or support Indigenous research, scholarly or artistic work, broad curriculum development, land-and-culture based pedagogic practice. Some of the teaching will be Land-Based and take place in the Humber Arboretum or other outdoor spaces.

The candidate must maintain and develop community partnerships, including relationships with regional Indigenous communities.

Qualifications

About You:

Education

• The successful candidate will have a minimum of a Master's degree credentials (PhD preferred), along with a minimum of five years of teaching experience in the postsecondary education sector, with a demonstrated record of teaching excellence and classroom innovation.
• The successful candidate will also have significant experience working with Indigenous communities in a health-related capacity.
• In addition, they will have a demonstrated ability to coach and support students using culturally responsive pedagogies, knowledge, and resources for instructional and educational development supporting both Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners.
• The incumbent will have strong knowledge and demonstrated experiences applying decolonizing/anti-racism pedagogical principles, and a commitment to and knowledge of the principles of equity and inclusion.
• Knowledge of the highly political nature of Indigenous Education and experience in navigating difficult conversations towards positive outcomes is also key.
• The candidate will also possess well-developed interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills and have demonstrated ability to contribute positively to curriculum development and delivery.

Experience/Skills

• Humber prides itself on educating students in the values of global citizenship; therefore, research and/or teaching experience in the areas of social justice, anti-bias, and Indigenous knowledge systems is required.
• The incumbent will also
  • provide consultation and support services that empower faculty to effectively weave Indigenous curriculum and pedagogies into their instructional design, strategies, assessment, technology, and learning outcomes;
  • research, design, and deliver a range of relevant workshops, training, and instructional supports to enhance faculty engagement with Indigenous histories and perspectives.
  • provide quality assurance support and guidance with regard to the integration and alignment of Indigenous content and courses within program curricula,
  • gather feedback from faculty and students to assess effectiveness of institutional strategies and curricula.
  • work closely with colleagues across the faculty to build capacity and supports for Indigenous students;
  • work with Indigenous communities to build mutual understanding and the development of meaningful conversations to strengthen Humber’s relationship with, and relevance in, Indigenous communities.
