Job description

The Program-Based Float Pool Registered Nurse will provide direct and indirect nursing care within the assigned clinical program supporting patient care needs across the program based on operational requirements patient acuity staffing needs and established program priorities.

The successful candidate will be assigned to the Cancer program located at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.

This role is intended to support safe staffing continuity of care vacancy coverage sick call replacement leaves of absence education support and other short-term or emerging operational needs within the program.

Assignments will be made in accordance with patient care needs operational requirements the nurses scope of practice demonstrated competency orientation training qualifications and applicable collective agreement provisions.

Other duties as required.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide safe competent patient- and family-centred nursing care within the assigned program.
  • Support staffing needs related to vacancies sick calls vacations leaves of absence education surge onboarding and other program priorities.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments identify changes in patient condition and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Administer medications treatments and procedures in accordance with hospital policies professional standards and applicable legislation.
  • Collaborate with physicians nurses allied health support services patients families and leaders to support quality care and positive patient outcomes.
  • Participate in program-specific orientation education mentorship and competency development.
  • Maintain required competencies and complete required education or validation prior to working independently in specialized or unfamiliar areas.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with professional and organizational standards.
  • Demonstrate professionalism flexibility adaptability and accountability in a variety of clinical practice environments.

Program-Based Float Expectations

The Program-Based Float Pool role is designed to provide flexibility within a defined clinical program while supporting safe consistent and competent nursing practice.

The successful candidate must be willing and able to:

  • Accept assignments based on patient care needs staffing requirements skill mix competency qualifications and operational priorities.
  • Maintain readiness to work in different clinical environments within the program.
  • Work collaboratively with educators professional practice managers and clinical teams to support continued development and safe practice.
  • Contribute to a collaborative learning environment by sharing program-specific knowledge and workflow information with team members where appropriate and within the expectations of the role
  • Staff will only be assigned to areas where they have received the appropriate orientation training and demonstrated competency.
  • support to develop specialty skills where operationally required;
    and opportunities to participate in quality improvement onboarding clinical practice and education initiatives.

Participation in upskilling opportunities will be based on program need staff interest where possible qualifications readiness orientation requirements demonstrated competency and applicable collective agreement provisions.

Required qualifications:

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Current Heart & Stroke approved Basic Life Support certification required at time of hire.
  • Recent clinical experience in Outpatient Oncology.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide safe competent evidence-informed nursing care within the assigned program.
  • Strong patient assessment critical thinking problem-solving and clinical decision-making skills.
  • Ability to recognize changes in patient condition and escalate appropriately.
  • Excellent communication interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of an interprofessional team.
  • Ability to work independently and manage changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated flexibility adaptability professionalism and commitment to patient- and family-centred care.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and professional development.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use clinical documentation systems.
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Satisfactory employment and attendance record required.

Program-Specific Qualifications

Depending on the assigned program additional qualifications may be required or preferred including but not limited to:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of recent clinical experience in oncology with demonstrated experience working in a float capacity across multiple clinical areas (e.g. systemic therapy supportive care injection clinics and FOCUS Fast Oncology Care for Urgent Symptoms)
  • Demonstrated competence in administering supportive cancer treatments and hormonal therapies including subcutaneous and intramuscular injections (e.g. Zoladex Fulvestrant Eligard Lupron)
  • Experience in an urgent care ambulatory acute care or emergency setting with demonstrated ability to assess triage and manage acutely unwell oncology patients
  • Demonstrated knowledge of oncologic emergencies (e.g. tumor lysis syndrome febrile neutropenia and more) and ability to recognize and respond appropriately in an ambulatory setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to support early intervention strategies contributing to reduced Emergency Department (ED) utilization and admission avoidance.
  • Advanced assessment triage and clinical decision-making skills in an ambulatory oncology setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience using oncology symptom and toxicity assessment tools (e.g. CoSTARS) to support timely assessment triage and management in person and virtual.
  • Demonstrated experience in patient and family education including individual and group settings with the ability to adapt teaching approaches to varying levels of health literacy and cognitive ability
  • Experience in program development and delivery of educational initiatives
  • Demonstrated counselling skills and ability to support patients and families through complex and evolving care journeys
  • Familiarity with Ontario Health Cancer Care Ontario (OH-CCO) guidelines standards and reporting requirements is an asset
  • Oncology Certification CON(C) preferred; Oncology Specialty Certificate considered an asset
  • Current membership with professional organizations (e.g. RNAO) and/or the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) is an asset
  • Knowledge of the Mississauga Halton Central West Regional Cancer Program is an asset

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference may be given to candidates who have:
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to changing clinical environments.
  • Demonstrated leadership mentorship preceptor or charge nurse experience.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development relevant to the program.
  • Interest in developing additional program-specific skills through supported upskilling orientation and competency development.


Additional Information :

Hours: Monday-Friday days shifts; 0800-1600 (Hours are subject to change based on operational needs)

Salary: $41.15 to $58.98 per hour
