Student Life & Learning Support consists of a wide range of support services that includes the Tri-Mentoring Program, TMU Leadership Program, International Student Support, Orientation & Campus Engagement, and Learning Support (made up of Math Support, Writing & Language Support, Graduate Student Support, and Study Skills & Transition Support). We provide opportunities for students to take ownership of their TMU experience so that they grow as socially, civically, and academically engaged members of their communities.

Qualifications

The role of a Writing Consultant is to:

• Tutor undergraduate students in writing-related skills through one-on-one appointments, drop-in hours, workshop presentations, writing groups, and special events. These sessions are offered online and in-person.
• Support undergraduate students with their university writing assignments as well as other professional and academic writing needs.
• Teach writing skills related to: thesis statements, argumentation, writing style, academic citations, ethical scholarship, scholarly research and research integration, critical reading, critical/analytical writing, and outlining.
• Maintain a log of student attendance and appointment comments after each appointment and event using the online booking tool.
• Develop and maintain new and existing writing resources, such as handouts and workshop presentations.
• Foster a supportive and welcoming environment for students experiencing school-related stress, and direct students to other appropriate supports when necessary.
• Attend consultant training sessions and participate in team meetings.

Required Experience & Skills:

• Previous tutoring experience preferred
• Strong academic performance
• Excellent command of the English language
• Experience working with multilingual students an asset
• Enrolled in: 1st year Masters, 2nd year Masters or PhD*

* Greater preference will be accorded first to Doctoral candidates, then to Master's candidates.

Please note: Only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. This position involves working with students, providing individual help for academic writing assignments, delivering workshops / group sessions, as well as the development of resources.

Salary & Compensation

Breakdown of Contract Hours:

95.00 Hours/Term Serving as consultant; leading workshops; developing instructional materials
5.00 Hours/Term Attending training; meeting with supervisor

100.00 Estimated Total Hours of Work*

*Hours are flexible and are dependent on student needs throughout the semester. Actual hours may vary at offer time dependent on qualifications and determined rate of pay. CUPE-3 employees can work up to a maximum of 130 hours per semester or 390 hours per academic year. Employees shall not be guaranteed work and when not on assignment they shall not receive any pay or payment in lieu of benefits.

Salary & Compensation:
Master - $51.17 per hour
PhD - $55.26 per hour
