The Opportunity

Position: Cryogenics Engineer

Employment Type: Permanent

Department: Nuclear Equipment Solutions

Reports to: Director, Nuclear Equipment and Tooling Process

Hours per week: 37.5

Starting Salary Range: $120,000 - $145,000. Exact compensation may vary depending on the individual experience and qualifications of each candidate. Applicants with greater or less than the minimum qualifications for this posted opportunity may be considered for alternate opportunities.

Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

  • Design, develop, test, and commission cryogenic systems and components
  • Support system testing, troubleshooting, optimizations, operations, and maintenance
  • Develop analytical models and simulations (thermal, fluid, performance)
  • Integrate cryogenic subsystems into larger scientific or industrial installations
  • Apply cryogenic safety standards and contribute to safety analyses (HAZOP, LOPA, etc.)
  • Work with suppliers and partners on equipment selection and system integration
  • Produce technical documentation, reports, and design records

What You Need to Succeed

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Cryogenic, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or related discipline

• 6+ years of experience in cryogenic engineering and/or cryogenic system operation

• Strong foundation in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and materials science

• Strong experience in cryogenic system design and operation for key working fluids (H₂, He, N₂), including liquefaction, cryogenic storage, transfer systems, and management of boil-off losses

• Experience with cryogenic refrigeration systems, vacuum technology, and leak detection

• Hands-on knowledge of PLC-based control systems and cryogenic instrumentation

• Familiarity with CAD tools, simulations, and technical documentation

• Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and optimizing cryogenic refrigeration systems, equipment, and technologies.

• Strong background in thermodynamics, materials science, and fluid mechanics, particularly at ultra-low temperatures.

• Experience with cryogenic instrumentation and controls, including:

  • PLC-based industrial control systems
  • Process instrumentation (pressure, flow, temperature, vacuum sensors, leak detection)

• Solid knowledge of cryogenic safety standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Project management experience, with the ability to handle multiple parallel priorities.

• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.

• Eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario.

• Proficiency with CAD tools and engineering simulation software.

This role requires the successful candidate to complete the security clearance process. The security clearance process is conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and may take up to 12 months to complete.
