Job description
Market Environmental

At Jacobs, we're challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving the world's most critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission-critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery and cutting-edge manufacturing, turning abstract ideas into realities that transform the world for good.

Your impact

When it comes to environmental consulting, we’re helping our clients protect our world’s natural resources. As an Ecologist, you will too. Grow your career with a company that inspires and empowers you to deliver your best work so you can evolve, grow, and succeed—today and into tomorrow. You’ll impact the world around you by helping us solve real-life challenges.

Based out of our office in Toronto or a home office in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), you’ll join our environmental team and work as part of multidisciplinary project teams associated with our environmental offices that span across Canada. You will act as a lead Ecologist, contributing to the environmental planning and permitting efforts of government (federal, provincial, and municipal) and privately-owned infrastructure projects. The work will include field data collection, writing technical reports, and regulatory applications.

This position will start in the spring with an anticipated 75% of travel for fieldwork and 25% office work in peak field seasons. A successful offer will be full-time or a 12-month contract depending on workload and/or skillset. Contracts have the potential for extension or conversion to full-time.

Bring your enthusiasm for learning and desire to conserve our natural resources, and we’ll help you grow!

Here's what you'll need
  • B.Sc. in biology, forestry, or natural resources related to botany, ecology, or environmental sciences; an equivalent post-secondary diploma; or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certification.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard terrestrial monitoring protocols, including Ecological Land Classification (ELC), forest silviculture assessments, and related vegetation and habitat survey methodologies.
  • Strong professional writing skills, including the ability to prepare defensible arborist reports that meet provincial standards and municipal requirements.
  • Vascular plant identification skills.
  • 2-5 years of relevant professional experience conducting arborist surveys and plan development.
  • Strong field skills and willingness to work in remote field locations for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lead field crews and coordinate subsequent reporting efforts.
  • A strong safety culture.
  • A driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract.

Ideally, you'll also have:

  • Experience with surveying for Species at Risk listed species (both vegetative and wildlife).
  • Ability to conduct multidisciplinary field scopes with guidance from subject matter experts, such as wetlands, wildlife, soils, and/or fisheries field assessments.
  • Knowledge and application of federal, provincial, and municipal environmental legislation, policies, and bylaws.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
