CBC Radio is looking for an Executive Producer to lead As It Happens. This is a permanent on-site full time role based in Toronto.

About the Show:

Every weekday As It Happens talks to the people at the centre of the national and international stories that matter most to Canadians. Hosted by Nil Köksal and Chris Howden the show is here to both inform and delight. Its been going strong on radio for almost 60 years and now lives as a successful podcast and a publisher of digital articles as well.

Your role:

CBC is looking for the next Executive Producer of As It Happens. You are an experienced motivated and inspired leader with creative ideas for evolving this long-running Canadian program. Youre passionate about getting the show to more Canadians wherever they listen to audio.

You will build on the strengths and reputation of As It Happens delivering world-class interviews alongside unique curious and quirkier fare. You will prioritize the right mix of stories for audiences ensuring that As It Happens is a must-listen show on the radio as a podcast and on streaming and social platforms.

You embrace new challenges and have a proven ability to plan communicate and implement change.

You are an experienced journalist with a passion for telling stories that connect with our existing listeners and attract new audiences.

You thrive on the challenges of producing a flagship daily news program motivating your team to create high quality content under tight deadlines.

You have a keen understanding of the ever-changing nature of news ensuring that the stories on As It Happens are updated as the program rolls out across the country.

You appreciate the shows legacy but also have a vision for where the program needs to go particularly in service of engaging younger audiences in the 30-49 demographic.

You are familiar with the CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices and ensure that As It Happens adheres to those guidelines on a daily basis.

You demonstrate a deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective opinion and experience so that it is reflected in all hiring and programming decisions.

Essential Skills:

  • Journalistic experience - you have clear strengths as a journalistic leader ensuring balance and a range of perspectives in our programming. You are comfortable making tough editorial calls that adhere with our Journalistic Standards and Practices.

  • Excellence in leadership - you have proven ability to bring out the best in people especially during periods of change. You have vision and a clear strategy that allows your team to successfully meet goals. You are an empathetic leader who creates a positive team environment so your team members can develop grow and thrive.

  • Audience focus and growth - you have the ability to survey data and translate that into editorial strategy that appeals to new and existing audiences on multi-platforms.

  • Proven programming sensibility - you encourage creativity in the use of sound scripting and innovative story treatments. You demand different perspectives from a diverse array of guests that represent regional political economic and cultural diversity.

Key Tasks:

  • Establishes a vision and measurable outcomes for programming and ensures the team meets targets.

  • Provides daily direction to the team on expectations around story coverage and development.

  • Works with other programs and departments including other current affairs shows news teams communications scheduling etc.

  • Plans leads and assigns special event coverage.

  • Develops staff by providing mentorship and training opportunities and gives ongoing feedback through the performance management process; oversees interns.

  • Leads decisions regarding our journalistic policy and seeks legal expertise if required. Communicates with our audiences including responding to complaints to the Ombudsman

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Minimum of seven (7) years professional experience; five must involve work in broadcasting or a closely-related industry with responsibilities directly relevant to this area of assignment.

  • A university degree or equivalent - journalism preferred.

  • A strong team leader with the ability to motivate and inspire staff while navigating them through change.

  • Demonstrated talent as a programmer with an ear for pacing tone presentation and production.

  • Superior writing editorial and production skills.

  • Extensive knowledge of national and international current affairs.

  • Expertise in multi-platform content production.

  • Solid journalistic background in news and current affairs

  • Ability to produce and distribute relevant audience-focused stories based on feedback and data that adhere to the programs mandate and CBC News strategy

  • Calm under pressure able to respond quickly to breaking news stories and deliver under tight deadlines

  • Commitment to reflecting community and diversity in our staffing and our programming

  • Demonstrated skills in the areas of conflict resolution mentoring talent growth and development

  • An innovator and risk taker - status quo is not the goal
