Curious about how global insurance companies manage market risk? This internship, available in our Toronto office, offers a unique opportunity to gain real-world exposure to hedging strategies, financial derivatives, and global risk management practices. You’ll work alongside experienced professionals within Manulife’s Global Asset Liability Management (ALM) function, contributing to high‑visibility hedging programs that manage equity, variable annuity (VA), and indexed universal life (IUL) risks. This role is ideal for undergraduate students who are eager to learn in a collaborative, front/middle‑office style environment.
Position Responsibilities:
Support daily risk exposure mapping processes that drive Manulife’s global hedging programs.
Produce aggregate exposure and high‑level reporting used to support internal hedging decisions.
Leverage Bloomberg and Reuters market data applications to ensure accurate classification of securities within internal fund mapping systems.
Maintain up‑to‑date security classification data, including reflecting corporate actions and market‑related changes.
Produce ad‑hoc risk exposure reports for exchange‑traded funds (ETFs) and mutual funds hedged as part of the program.
Collaborate with team members to support the monitoring and performance analysis of hedging strategies.
Gain practical exposure to financial markets, derivatives, and real‑world trading‑related decision making.
Required Qualifications:
Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Business, Finance, Actuarial Science, Mathematics (preferably financial modelling), Risk Management, or a related field.
Strong interest in financial markets, hedging, and risk management fundamentals.
Advanced Excel skills are required (experience with VBA or Python is a strong asset).
Highly detail‑oriented with a strong focus on data integrity and accuracy.
Strong analytical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to operate in a professional front/middle‑office style environment.
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team‑oriented setting while demonstrating ownership and accountability.
Demonstrates curiosity, a willingness to learn, and a proactive approach to challenges.
