What it's like to be a Northbridge Underwriter
Our Marine Underwriters work closely with our Broker partners to assess, price, and underwrite Marine insurance risks across a diverse and complex portfolio, including cargo, hull, and marine liability exposures. This role is ideal for an underwriter early in their career who has a strong commercial insurance foundation and is looking to specialize in Marine underwriting within a leading Canadian insurer.
This role is well suited to Marine professionals who are considering a move from an MGA or brokerage environment to the carrier side and are ready to be closer to underwriting decisions. You’ll move beyond supporting or placing business and gain hands‑on exposure to risk selection, pricing strategy, and portfolio management, supported by training and mentorship as you grow your underwriting authority over time.
You’ll support the underwriting of Marine risks, including transit‑based exposures and complex coverage structures, in accordance with established guidelines. Working collaboratively with fellow Underwriters, Corporate Underwriting, and Actuarial Pricing teams, you’ll help ensure we are writing the right risks at the right price. You’ll carefully analyze exposure, data quality, pricing adequacy, and coverage structure, including Marine policy wordings and clauses, while maintaining high underwriting and service standards. This is a hands‑on, learning‑focused role within a small, highly specialized Marine team. You’ll be supported through structured training and ongoing mentorship as you build deep technical Marine expertise, with the expectation that you’ll grow into greater independence over time.
You’re passionate about building strong relationships with Broker partners, enjoy problem‑solving, and bring curiosity, attention to detail, and a desire to learn a complex specialty line of business within the Marine insurance market.
If you’re currently working in a Marine MGA or brokerage environment, you already bring valuable market knowledge. Joining our Marine underwriting team gives you the opportunity to apply that experience on the carrier side, underwriting complex Marine risks, influencing pricing and coverage decisions, and developing long‑term technical expertise within a specialist portfolio.
We want your talent
If you are great at:
Commercial insurance underwriting fundamentals
Risk assessment, analysis, and decision‑making
Building and maintaining strong Broker relationships
Learning and applying technical underwriting concepts
Communicating clearly and collaborating across teams
If you have:
1–5 years of underwriting experience, ideally within commercial lines, with relevance to Marine or specialty risks
Exposure to Marine insurance (underwriting, brokerage, MGA, or claims) is strongly preferred, or a genuine interest in specialising in Marine
A foundational understanding of how commercial insurance works
A strong customer service mindset
A team‑first, eager‑to‑learn attitude
Completed, or currently pursuing, CIP (FCIP, CRM, or other designations are an asset)
Bilingualism (English/French) is considered a strong asset
This role is particularly well suited to Marine professionals who are ready for their next step and want to move closer to underwriting decisions, technical development, and long‑term career progression on the carrier side.
