Ontario Bureau Chief

Location: Toronto

Description of Role

We’re looking for an energetic leader with rock-solid news judgment and a knack for generating original ideas to oversee the Ontario bureau of The Canadian Press. The successful candidate will be an experienced supervisor who has a hunger for breaking news and is able to mentor and inspire staff to unearth scoops and set the agenda. This manager will oversee a group of reporters in CP’s Toronto head office and our Queen’s Park correspondents.

Responsibilities:

  • Working closely with the Ontario news editor, oversees coverage of the news report in Ontario for CP’s digital, print, video and broadcast services.
  • Supervises and schedules staff at Toronto head office and at Queen’s Park.
  • Liaises with other CP bureaus and the Managing Editor to help co-ordinate coverage.
  • Assigns and edits stories.
  • Ensures staff are generating ideas for stories on a daily basis, as well as for mid- and long-term projects.
  • Liaises with CP media clients.
  • Works closely with CP’s Sales and Marketing team on client relations.
  • Mentors, coaches and manages team performance by establishing specific goals and objectives.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a strong background in journalism including considerable experience as a manager or supervisor, and excellent knowledge of current events and issues in Ontario.
  • Have proven skills in using digital tools to gather news and tell stories in a variety of ways for a variety of platforms.
  • Be independent and bring new ideas to CP’s news report as it continues to adapt to the changing needs and demands of CP clients.
  • Have a proven track record covering breaking news and a basic working knowledge of media law
  • Encourage the Ontario bureau’s optimum performance on all platforms.
  • Be capable of representing CP in a professional manner to clients and the broader public.

Hiring Range: The base salary for this role ranges from $100,000 to $125,000 per year. Placement within this range depends on a candidate's level of experience, technical skills. ad alignment with the role requirements.

  • Travaille étroitement avec le chef des nouvelles de l’Ontario, supervise la couverture des reportages en Ontario pour les services numérique, écrit, vidéo et radio de la PC.
  • Supervise et établit les horaires du personnel au siège social de Toronto et à Queen’s Park.
  • Assure la liaison avec les autres bureaux de la PC et le directeur de l’information pour aider à la coordination de la couverture.
  • S’occupe de l’affectation et la révision des nouvelles.
  • S’assure que le personnel propose des idées de reportage sur une base quotidienne, de même que pour des projets à moyen et long terme.
  • Assure la liaison avec la clientèle média de la PC.
  • Collabore étroitement avec l’équipe des ventes et marketing de la PC sur les relations avec la clientèle.
  • Gère, oriente et soutient la performance de l’équipe en fixant des objectifs spécifiques.

Compétences:

  • De solides antécédents en journalisme, avec notamment une bonne expérience de direction ou de supervision et une excellente connaissance de l’actualité ontarienne.
  • Des compétences éprouvées de l’utilisation des outils numériques pour obtenir de l’information et réaliser des reportages de diverses façons pour différentes plateformes.
  • Indépendance d’esprit et aptitude à avancer de nouvelles idées de reportage pour la PC alors qu’elle continue à s’adapter aux demandes et besoins changeants de sa clientèle.
  • Avoir une expérience avérée dans le traitement des nouvelles de dernière heure et une connaissance pratique de base du droit des médias
  • Encourager la performance optimale du bureau de l’Ontario sur toutes les plateformes.
  • Être capable de représenter la PC de manière professionnelle auprès des clients et d’un public plus large.
