Job description

What is the Opportunity?

Safer. Faster. Smarter. This is how Aecon Utilities is committed to delivering projects. Aecon Utilities is a leading North American utility infrastructure provider with a strong track record delivering safe, reliable and innovative solutions across electrical, telecommunications, pipeline distribution and renewable energy markets. With operations across North America, Aecon Utilities supports critical utility infrastructure that powers and keeps communities connected. Guided by our core value of Safety Always, we partner with clients to build the infrastructure that powers the future.

As part of Aecon’s Utilities sector, the Aecon Utility Engineer (AUE) team plays a pivotal role in supporting construction through in-house engineering expertise. AUE is dedicated to enhancing project outcomes by integrating value-added quality management assurance programs that meet and exceed client expectations.

We’re looking for passionate professionals who thrive in a collaborative environment and are ready to contribute to impactful projects that shape communities. If you're driven by purpose and want to be part of a team that builds with integrity and innovation, Aecon Utilities is where your career can thrive.

AUE is seeking a CAD QC Specialist to lead quality‑control activities across FTTH and coaxial design packages, ensuring all drawings, documentation, and records meet Municipal Operations Centre standards and regulatory requirements. In this role, you will audit CAD deliverables, resolve design issues in collaboration with project and field teams, and drive continuous improvement across QC processes, technologies, and drafting workflows.

What You'll Do Here:

  • Establish and maintain quality control (QC) processes in compliance with Municipal Operations Centre standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Implement QC procedures to ensure the integrity of documents, electronic images, and records.
  • Identify and recommend improvements to processes, systems, technologies, and procedures.
  • Resolve routine challenges independently, while escalating complex issues to senior team members as needed.
  • Interpret permit drawings and utilize city websites to understand project scope and requirements.
  • Collaborate with Project Designers and Field Inspectors to troubleshoot and resolve design-related issues.
  • Prepare design drawings, quantity calculations, and as-built documentation for various utility projects using software such as AutoCAD and MicroStation.
  • Retrieve physical records from customer databases and other record management systems.
  • Conduct field work and data collection to ensure compliance with CSA/ESA guidelines for aerial, buried, and underground structures.
  • Analyze and interpret records to develop cost-effective designs aligned with client requirements.
  • Maintain detailed records and documentation related to design and project management activities.
  • Monitor ongoing projects to ensure adherence to standard construction methods.
  • Audit CAD drawings for FTTH and coaxial projects, validating clearances, layer standards, symbology, and annotation accuracy.
  • Provide feedback to the CAD team and support training initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Design QC and Permitting teams to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in Telephony Outside Plant Engineering design, including copper and fibre networks and structural design.
  • High proficiency in AutoCAD (2D and 3D), including experience customizing scripts, tools, and menus.
  • Prior drafting or design experience in the Telephony industry.
  • Proven experience obtaining Municipal Consents from various municipalities.
  • College diploma or university degree in a technical discipline (e.g., Civil, Electrical, Surveying), or equivalent field experience in telephony splicing, construction, or utility locating services.
  • Strong ability to build and maintain relationships with clients and municipal stakeholders.
  • In-depth understanding of municipal standards; familiarity with CSA standards is considered an asset.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Solid understanding of telecommunications, electrical/civil engineering drawings, and site plans.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, with a strong attendance record and safety awareness.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to efficiently proofread technical documents.
  • Effective decision-making skills under limited supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, with a proactive approach to identifying and implementing solutions or escalating when necessary.
  • Comfortable working in a high-volume, process-driven environment.
  • Proven ability to plan, organize, and execute tasks effectively.
