Job description

Ontario Transit Group

Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc. and VINCI Construction Grands Projets are undertaking the design, build, and finance the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations, and Tunnel (South Civil) package.

Company Description

As Ontario Transit Group, we are now mobilizing our design and construction crews, with major works. The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030. The project will strengthen Ontario’s economy by supporting an estimated 1,500 jobs at the peak of construction.

What is the project?

  • A six‑kilometer tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River)
  • Stations:
    • One above‑ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station
    • Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations
    • Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown)

The Benefits To Ontario

Faster, more frequent, and reliable access to rapid transit with more than 227,500 people will live within a 10‑minute walk of an Ontario Line station.

  • Improve the quality of life for commuters by reducing daily travel time.
  • Reduce crowding on the existing Line 1 (Yonge‑University) subway.
  • Up to 57,000 more jobs accessible by transit (in 45 minutes or less) for Toronto residents.
  • Economic and community growth along the future transit line and thousands of job opportunities annually during construction.
  • Reduction in traffic congestion, greenhouse gases and fuel consumption by providing an alternative transportation option.

Job Description

The Monitoring Surveyor plays a vital role in ensuring the structural integrity of the Ontario Line South project by collecting and analyzing critical data throughout the construction phases.

Working as part of a mobile team, you'll be responsible for conducting various monitoring activities across different project sites, sometimes including working within active construction zones. This 24/7 rotating shift (including nights, weekends, and on‑call) schedule demands flexibility, strong communication skills, and the ability to adapt to changing weather and traffic conditions.

The salary range for this position is $70,000 CAD - $85,000 CAD, plus additional benefits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct various monitoring activities as directed by the Monitoring Lead Surveyor, including readings from Building Monitoring Points (BMPs), Surface Monitoring Points (SMPs), Ground Monitoring Points (GMPs), and Utility Monitoring Points (UMPs).
  • Communicate with the Monitoring Lead Surveyor and traffic control supervisors to ensure safety and efficient data collection.
  • Report and document any damaged monitoring points, benchmarks, or equipment encountered during site visits.
  • Collaborate with the team to propose and implement improvements to the BMP, SMP, GMP, and UMP reading processes.
  • Perform regular instrument checks and ensure all equipment is functioning properly.
  • Assist other Monitoring Surveyors with their tasks when required.
  • Adhere to all OTG safety protocols and attend all mandatory safety training sessions.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in Surveying/Geomatics or 2 to 5 years of experience in construction surveying, with a strong understanding of civil works practices.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work schedules (day or night shifts) and weather conditions.
  • Prior experience working on construction monitoring projects is preferred.
  • Proficiency in using surveying equipment, including total stations and digital levels.
  • Strong understanding of monitoring methodologies and their purpose within construction projects.
  • Excellent knowledge of Leica survey equipment is preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively in open public environments and active traffic lanes, prioritizing safety and awareness.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with team members and supervisors.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to upholding project specifications and tolerances.
