Reporting to the EHS Director, the Safety Lead is a leader of safety excellence, responsible for ensuring compliance with the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) plan and assisting in the supervision of the assigned project.
What You’ll Do Here:
- Administer the EHS Program and promote the highest level of safety.
- Provide direction and support for managers, supervisors, and sub-contractors regarding their responsibilities for maintaining a positive and inclusive safety culture.
- Ensure all workplace parties fulfill their responsibilities for the EHS program.
- Participate in the pre-planning stages of work.
- Prepares and assists with external safety audits such as (COR).
- Participate in site-walks with the workers’ safety representatives to assess safety measures and address any deficiencies.
- Support project specific conventional safety and environmental management plans and procedures, including; inspections, audits, observation, coaching, Worker Trades Committee, and JHSC.
- Facilitate site specific safety orientation to workers, owners, and clients.
- Train employees on Aecon’s Health, Safety and Environmental Manual, fall protection, confined space entry, traffic protection, WHMIS, respiratory protection, First Aid, Fork lift, fire emergency, and emergency evacuations.
- Tracks and reports safety-related statistics, modified duties cases at the field level, and manages return to work.
- Conducts behavioral observation in the workplace.
- Updates Material Safety Data Sheets as required.
- Develop workplace plans – such as emergency evacuations (Emergency Response Plan), fire emergency, traffic controls, fall protection, etc.
- Order Safety related PPE for the Project using Aecon’s PPE Catalogue.
- Manage the distribution of safety material, supplies and equipment for the Project.
- Assist in the development of FMEA, JHA’s / JSA’s, Safe Work Procedures for High Risk Activities, Critical Lifting and Handling.
- Promote the Aecon Safety Program and System to potential industry clients.
- Participate as a management member of Joint Health and Safety Committees.
- Assist in Accident/Incident investigations and analyze any recurring trends.
- Inspects project facilities and recommends and follows up on corrective actions.
- Work with the Claims Administrator to assist with workers compensation claims and associated activities.
- Develop return to work and modified work programs.
- Gathers and provides statistical information to Estimating team for tender packages.
- Supports Human Performance program activities and events.
- Drives an inclusive culture to promote equity, welcome different perspectives, and enable career progression by fostering a sense of belonging.
- Liaise with external parties such as government inspectors, sub-contractors, and general public.
- Other duties as assigned.
What You Bring to the Team:
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety (Bachelor’s degree, community college or equivalent experience in the H&S field).
- National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) required or (CRSP or OHS)
- Minimum 5 years’ experience managing Health and Safety on construction projects.
- Experience leading and developing a team of EHS professionals.
- Knowledge of Construction projects with a solid understanding of Occupational Health (OHSA), Safety legislation, and Workers’ Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) policies.
- Strong knowledge of WCB and return to work program.
- Experience delivering EHS training programs to individuals and groups.
- Ability to effectively communicate with tact and diplomacy.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Resourceful, organized and understands the principles of Health and Safety Management.
- Ability to identify problems or issues and generate solutions, resolve conflicts and make sound decisions
- Demonstrated ability to present information clearly to individuals as well as small or large teams.
- Adaptable and flexible to a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work in a remote location and shift rotations, live in camp accommodation.
- Valid Driver's License
- Security Clearance and Background Checks Required.
Reason for Vacancy: New
Pay Range: $115,000 - $145,000 per year
Individual pay is determined based on several factors, including work location, education, experience, unique skills and job conditions. Other considerations may include certifications, specialized training, and the complexity or scope of the role.
