Vancouver Shipyards, based in North Vancouver, has been very busy working on some exciting projects. We continue to make progress on two 174m long Joint Support Ships (JSS) for the Royal Canadian Navy - the largest ships ever built in Canada! We are working towards delivery of an Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel (OOSV) for the Canadian Coast Guard, and will be starting construction later this year of the first heavy Polar Icebreaker built in Canada for over 50 years.

Following that we have several Multi-Purpose Vessels that are currently designing for construction in years to come. These projects bring long-term job stability on some of the most exciting and significant shipbuilding opportunities in the world.

Marine Shipbuilding Electricians install the wireways, cable, equipment, and switchgear that bring all the functional systems to life.

Electrical systems and installation requirements in ship construction can be unique and require an expanded knowledge set.

Duties / Accountabilities

  • Read and interpret drawings, shop orders, schematics, and electrical system specifications to determine the layout and proper installation of electrical equipment.
  • Perform electrical fitting installations, stud runs, cableways, controller mounts, and all mounting hardware involved with marine electrical equipment.
  • Install electrical wiring, boxes, panels, devices, feeders, cable assemblies, lighting fixtures, and other electrical components.

Including bonding and earthing installation.

  • Terminate and test electrical and electronic equipment and components for continuity, current, voltage, and resistance.
  • Maintain, repair, test, and install electrical motors, generators, industrial storage batteries, and hydraulic and pneumatic electrical controls.
  • Ability to detect, diagnose, maintain, and repair marine electrical systems.
  • Work as a member of a team demonstrating skills to adapt, interpret and problem solve.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Arrive to work on time during your scheduled shifts.

Education & Qualifications

  • Journeyperson Red Seal Construction or Industrial Electrician Certification.
  • Minimum 1 year of industrial / commercial installation experience.
  • Knowledge / experience of shipbuilding process and terminology is a benefit.

Skills, Knowledge, and Required Competencies

  • Ability to read and interpret specifications, understand, and apply drawings / shop orders, and understand the contract requirements and schedule constraints.
  • Ability to comprehend, recall, and follow written and spoken word and safety-related directions in English, including over radio and other electronic media.
  • Learn and apply information from on-the-job and classroom training.
  • Ability to work in and navigate confined spaces, and indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to changing weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods, climb ladders, crawl, crouch, kneel, and / or stoop is required. Overhead work is also a high frequency in this position and therefore, neck and bilateral shoulder rotation use is important.
  • Ability to recognize and anticipate potential hazards, take precautions, and follow all safety protocols & procedures.
  • Ability to work in a team environment or individually with a positive attitude.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply Red Seal-trained math skills including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

This position requires Union membership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) - Local 213 (upon employment) and offers excellent health, welfare & pension packages after the completion of 480 hours.

The current Red Seal Journeyperson will earn $54.29 p / hr (overtime is double time).
