Job Summary

The Team

The Cone & Seed Processing team at the Tree Seed Centre is a dedicated and established group, consisting of 3 regular team members and up to 6 additional auxiliary staff, depending on workload.

Collaborating with the other business areas at the Tree Seed Centre, this group plays a critical role in core operations by processing cones and seeds to be used in reforestation, with annual workloads varying based on crop size.

The Role

As the Operations Technician, you'll be responsible for key tasks in cone and seed processing, ensuring the preservation and quality of seeds for BC's reforestation efforts.

You will provide senior technical support and expertise to cone and seed processing and inventory management functions.

Within these areas, you coordinate and monitor activities, provide technical direction and guidance to staff, conduct technical inspections and monitoring of seed, and make judgements on seed condition and the appropriate processing, treatment and testing regimes.

Your work will directly contribute to the province's environmental sustainability and have a lasting impact on future generations.

Qualifications :

Education and Experience Requirements

University degree or diploma in a related field such as forestry, natural resource sciences, agriculture, horticulture, botany or allied sciences plus a minimum of two years practical and related experience;

or the equivalent combination of education and experience such as three years related resource environment experience and relevant job training courses.

  • Related job experience includes (but is not restricted to) the following :
  • working with tree seed
  • working with live botanical products
  • Must possess and maintain (or be immediately able to obtain) a valid BC Class 5 or 7 Driver's License (or equivalent) to meet the transportation requirements of the position.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following :

  • Two (2) or more years of demonstrated supervisory responsibilities.
  • Experience working with cone and seed processing equipment and process operations or demonstrated experience working in a high volume production environment with simultaneous technical activities involving a living botanical product.
  • Experience with the Seed Planning and Registry System (SPAR), Cone and Seed Processing System (CONSEP), or current technology including environmental control software (e.g. Argus).
  • Experience with cone and seed processing including receipt, conditioning, upgrading and testing / assessment. Working knowledge of inventory management including receipt, storage, preparation and distribution.
  • Experience with current technology including environment control systems, (e.g.) Argus, computer PC and customized software applications.

Provisos / Willingness statement(s)

  • Wear appropriate safety equipment as required
  • Meet safety standards of WorkSafe BC including obtaining level one first aid certification
  • Able to work shifts and overtime as needed and travel occasionally
  • Flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structure
  • Able to frequently lift and carry moderate weights for short distances with occasional use of ladders and stairs
  • Able to occasionally lift and carry heavy equipment (up to 25 kg) and supplies for short distances (4 m)
  • Operate a variety of equipment and work at heights using lifts and ladders. For example, climbing a 4 m ladder
  • Work with and around organic dust and mould and in extreme temperatures (-18C to + 40C) with wind and noise
  • Work around machinery, moving equipment (e.g. forklifts, conveyor belts, etc.)
  • Work in a high production environment where many critical concurrent activities must be carried out
  • Forklift training certificate, valid level one first aid or the ability to obtain these

This position has full time on-site requirements.

This is a temporary opportunity until March 31, 2025. This position may be extended or become permanent.
