Reports To: Senior Director Finance Controller

I. Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities

As a key member of the "Business Support Services" (BSS) team, the Director, Finance, reporting directly to the Senior Director Finance Controller, is responsible for leading and overseeing the finance business partners team. This role is crucial in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of financial processes, including month-end close, reporting, budgeting, and forecasting. The Director provides strategic guidance, fosters collaboration, and implements innovative solutions to enhance the organization’s financial management and reporting capabilities.

In this capacity, the Director provides strong leadership, communicates effectively, and demonstrates emotional intelligence to support and guide the finance business partners team. This team is instrumental in driving the finance month-end process and managing financial reporting, thereby facilitating informed decision-making within the organization.

Additionally, the Director offers expert guidance on current and future business system requirements, leading the implementation and integration of ongoing and upcoming system projects to ensure alignment with the organization’s objectives.

A critical aspect of this role involves vigilant monitoring and assessment of various systems and reporting tools vital to the organization’s control mechanisms. This evaluation process identifies opportunities to streamline operations, improve efficiencies, and enhance overall performance. By leveraging industry best practices and the latest technological advancements, the Director introduces innovative solutions to address business challenges effectively.

Furthermore, the Director collaborates closely with Business Leaders and the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) at CNIB, actively engaging with them to identify specific business needs. They forge partnerships with external developers to design and implement user‑centric solutions that meet these business requirements. This collaborative approach optimizes business processes, resulting in a more responsive and efficient operational framework.

II. Essential Functions

The position entails, but is not limited to the following general responsibilities:

  • Lead the CNIB’s Financial planning and reporting process, prepare monthly and quarterly Financial Reporting Packages tailored to different stakeholder groups.
  • Present financial information to the Executive Leadership Team with support analysis and recommendations.
  • Budget coordination and planning, lead budgeting process, including data collection, evaluation, and validation.
  • Assist in financial forecasting to provide insights into future financial performance.
  • Play a key role in the development of a 3-year Budget and Strategy, as the organization strives to improve its longer‑term outlook and planning.
  • Financial performance analysis, analyze current performance using financial metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Identify and quantify changes needed to improve KPI performance, working from summary‑level metrics down to detailed transaction data.
  • Oversee post‑implementation usage and testing of finance business tools such as NetSuite PBCS, NetSuite, Power BI, etc.
  • Look to improve financial reporting through more accessible ways, adapting information using innovative technology and dashboards.
  • Evaluate the ongoing efficacy and, if suitable, the implementation and administration of OneStream as the new reporting, budgeting, and forecasting tool, and/or assist in finding an alternative tool that would accommodate CNIB’s needs.
  • Assist the operational team with month‑end duties to ensure a smooth financial close process.
  • Work with Executive Leadership Team members to review monthly results and explain variance to budget or revised forecast to ensure departments stay on track with spending, revenue and/or fundraising targets.
  • Communicate complex financial insights clearly to leaders to aid in strategic, data‑driven decision‑making.
  • Utilize strong interpersonal and problem‑solving skills to offer actionable recommendations based on financial analysis and industry trends.
  • Provide leadership and management to at least one direct report.
  • Ad‑hoc analysis, projects and other assignments as required.

III. Qualifications

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Knowledge of Canadian accounting standards and principles
  • Knowledge of Canadian statutory requirements for non‑profit and charity organizations
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a changing environment.
  • Must have 7 plus years of accounting and finance experience at management level.
  • Strong analytical and strategic‑thinking skills
  • Well‑developed interpersonal and communications skills
  • Proficiency in advanced excel and word and other MS Office applications.
  • Experience using Business Intelligence tools (Power Bi and/or Tableau)
  • Advanced Excel skills including but not limited to Pivot Tables, Macros, Power Query, Power Pivot, VBAs etc.
  • Experienced in using NetSuite, NetSuite PBCS, SAP Concur, ADP workforce, Sales Force, QuickBooks.
  • Solid understanding of the relationship of internal controls and business processes with financial statements.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with cross‑team collaboration.
  • Strong business analysis, planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
  • Proven leadership and team management skills, with the ability to mentor and inspire teams.
  • Effective problem‑solving and critical‑thinking abilities, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
  • High level of adaptability and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic and fast‑paced environment.
  • Conflict resolution and negotiation skills to address challenges constructively and foster positive outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prior experience working with non‑profit, member organizations would be considered an asset.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours.
  • Willingness to support month‑end on a tight schedule
  • Willingness to travel to any other CNIB office, participate in special projects and other related as required.
