Job description

Members of Parliament are responsible to uphold the principles and practices of Canadian democracy. They sit in the House of Commons to serve as representatives of the people who have elected them to that office. Members consider and vote on legislation in the chamber, attend committee and caucus meetings, and perform a wide range of duties in their constituencies. They also represent Canada when travelling abroad on official business or when hosting foreign dignitaries.

Job Description

The House of Commons Administration is currently looking to create a pool of candidates for anticipatory staffing of the Constituency Assistant role.

About the role:

Reporting directly to the Member of Parliament, the Constituency Assistant plays a key role in providing comprehensive casework, executive, and administrative support. This position is essential in supporting the Member’s key objectives and priorities through effective outreach, communication, event planning, and other strategic activities.

Primary responsibilities:

As the Constituency Assistant, you will manage the Member’s communications, maintain their schedule, and coordinate meetings, travel, and events. You will also draft correspondence, provide administrative support, and help manage systems for tracking requests and deadlines.

Your role will involve assisting constituents with various cases, including immigration and Canada Revenue, ensuring timely follow-ups and resolutions. Additionally, you will support special projects and perform other duties as needed to ensure the smooth running of the constituency office.

Top reasons to apply:

This is a great opportunity for individuals interested in Canadian politics who want to make a meaningful impact within their community. As a Constituency Assistant, you will develop your skills in communication, problem-solving, and time management while working in a dynamic environment.

We’re looking for individuals who are highly organized, able to multi-task, and skilled in administrative duties. You'll work both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating tact and diplomacy when interacting with others. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), database management, and general computer literacy are essential to succeed in this role.

Gain valuable experience in parliamentary processes, contribute to community initiatives, and develop essential skills in a dynamic and impactful environment.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Post-secondary education from a recognized institution OR an acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience.

Experiences:

  • Experience providing reception or administrative support in a professional office environment;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and concisely;
  • Experience within a fast-paced client service environment;
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft tools, in particular, Word, Excel, and Outlook;
  • Experience in collaborating with clients and partners to problem solve and achieve a common objective.

Asset:

  • Experience in the political field (Hill, Campaign, or Constituency Office).
