Program overview: Turning Point Youth Services (TPYS) is an accredited, nonprofit agency serving youth (12 to 24 years) and their families in the east end of Toronto. TPYS focuses on mental health, housing/sheltering, and youth justice. TPYS and WoodGreen Community Services integrated on July 2, 2024 to provide more integrated support services for youth in the GTA. The Youth Mental Health Court Worker (YMHCW) provides assessment, referral and case management for youth with a criminal justice matter under the Youth Justice Court. The YMHCW links youths with appropriate community, mental health and youth justice resources and contributes to the Community Youth Court (CYC) by making recommendations to the Crown Attorney and developing treatment plans.

What You Will Do

  • Complete criminogenic risk needs assessments and mental health screening and assessments as applicable.
  • Provide assessment and brief counselling as indicated, while promoting youth and family engagement.
  • Promote an inclusive environment that upholds equity and respects diversity.
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team to serve youth and their families.
  • Lead development of service/treatment plans for youth.
  • Oversee maintenance of client files and ensure integrity of clinical information.
  • Maintain client records per agency standards and privacy policies and legislation.
  • Complete administrative duties within required timeframes.
  • Effectively utilize communication systems to convey client- and program-related information.
  • Represent the Agency professionally when dealing with families, external professionals, the public and community partners.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, ongoing training and supervision, and all mandatory agency training.
  • Work in accordance with all Agency policies and procedures and identify opportunities to improve clinical and counselling services, systems, policies and procedures.

What You Bring to the Team

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Clinical Psychology or Counselling.
  • Minimum 3 years (preferably post-graduate) experience with adolescents, preferably in the youth justice system.
  • Knowledge and experience with evidence-informed interventions for youth with acute mental health and substance abuse issues (trauma-informed philosophy).
  • Strong clinical assessment and brief counselling skills; knowledge of mental health diagnosis and treatments.
  • Strong strengths-based, relationship-based approach; understanding of the YCJA and complex criminogenic risks and needs of youth in court.
  • Sensitivity to and ability to work with diverse client and staff groups; ability to build strong working relationships within the youth justice system and community.
  • Experience in youth justice and/or children’s mental health systems; ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team; professional judgment in conflict/crisis situations.

  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification and completion of required crisis intervention training; registration and good standing with Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and/or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.

What Will Set You Apart

  • Appreciation of engaging youth and families from a strength-based, relationship-based approach.
  • Sensitivity to diverse communities and anti-oppression, client-centered, anti-racism, harm-reduction and trauma-informed practice.
  • Knowledge of issues affecting marginalized communities, policies, legislation, programs, social determinants of health, and experience with diverse and marginalized communities (ethno-cultural, LGBTQ2S+, poverty-impacted, youth justice).

This is a collective bargaining unit position with CUPE Local 3501.
