Job description

Positions Available With Various Employers Across Long-Term Care and Home Care in Nova Scotia

The continuing care sector is partnering together to hire and provide an Enhanced LPN Orientation for internationally educated nurses (IENs). This is an innovative and supportive initiative aimed at helping IENs transition seamlessly into LPN roles within the sector.

A LPN is one of the three designations of professional nurses in Nova Scotia, with Registered Nurses (RNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) making-up the other two. There are many opportunities for LPNs in the continuing care sector in Nova Scotia.

Successful applicants will attend an in-person, comprehensive refresher program, focusing on the essential knowledge and clinical skills needed to provide safe, competent care for those in continuing care settings.

Participants who successfully complete the enhanced orientation program will be required to commit to a two-year return of service agreement as an LPN with their employer. This commitment ensures a stable transition into the workforce while fostering long-term professional development.

Responsibilities:

  • While each employer will require slightly different responsibilities of their LPNs, in general, responsibilities can be expected to include:
  • Resident checks and rounds (including, but not limited to vitals, breathing, incontinent round, safety rounds, narcotic, charting)
  • Medication administration (includes processing doctor’s orders)
  • Resident personal care (includes feeding/assistance, bowel care, dressing, wound care, blood work)
  • Resident, family, and staff support (includes addressing questions and concerns, assisting other workers)
  • General duties and administration (includes mail, paper work, ordering supplies, assigning duties)
  • Provides leadership to Continuing Care Assistants and other health services staff
  • Completes other tasks and duties as assigned

Core Requirements:

The successful candidates will:

  • Be an internationally educated nurse
  • Hold one of the following valid Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN) licenses:
  1. conditional RN license and the ability to obtain a NSCN Licensed Practical Nurse license by the first day of the orientation
  2. full RN license and the ability to obtain a NSCN Licensed Practical Nurse license by the first day of the orientation
  3. conditional LPN license
  • Have experience as a RN within the last five years.
  • Have valid CPR and First Aid certification within the last year.
  • Have clear criminal and vulnerable sector check within the past three months.
  • Have previous experience working with the elderly in long-term care or home care.
  • Currently reside in Nova Scotia

What We Offer:

  • An Enhanced LPN Orientation Program. This 6-week program includes classroom and on-unit components. Participants are paid for their time in the program.
  • Positions Available Across the Province
  • Attractive Compensation and Benefits Package
