Senior Data Science Developer

We are seeking a highly accomplished Senior Data Science Developer to spearhead the technical design, architectural optimization, and migration of enterprise cloud data products. In this role, you will hold complete engineering ownership over the evolution of data lake and lakehouse structures—transitioning legacy transactional pathways into highly scalable, automated pipelines. Operating within an Agile environment, you will bridge the gap between advanced data engineering and downstream data science analytics, creating reusable ingestion frameworks and establishing rigorous governance matrices to ensure maximum code quality and system performance.

Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid – 3 days per week onsite, subject to hiring manager's discretion)

Duration: 6-month contract

Responsibilities
Lakehouse Architecture & Engineering: Design, build, and optimize enterprise-grade cloud data lakes and lakehouse structures following a structured Medallion Architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold data layers).

Pipeline Modernization & Migration: Lead the technical migration of legacy data pipelines from Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Data Factory (including SQL stored procedures, relational views, and flat Parquet files) over to modernized Databricks-based solutions leveraging Delta Lake formats.

Orchestration & Data Ingestion: Engineer, program, and maintain automated, low-latency data pipelines and data-driven models utilizing Azure Data Factory (ADF) and native Azure Databricks orchestration capabilities.

Reusable Framework Development: Author codebase standards and develop reusable code modules that streamline pipeline generation, abstract technical system specifications, and eliminate redundant workflow building.

Database Programming & Tuning: Write highly optimized Python scripts and SQL queries to parse, clean, transform, and aggregate high-volume datasets while maintaining relational integrity.

Data Governance & Security Controls: Ensure data products conform to enterprise standards, security policies, and privacy mandates, leveraging tools like Databricks Unity Catalog for centralized data asset governance.

CI/CD Lifecycle Governance: Manage source code lifecycles, branching protocols, and pull requests within GitHub, deploying automated continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to guarantee seamless environmental promotions.

Peer Code Reviews & Walkthroughs: Conduct and participate in rigorous peer code reviews to enforce development guidelines, maximize processing speeds, and eliminate technical debt.

Knowledge Transfer & Collaboration: Deliver detailed system documentation, runbooks, and formal knowledge-sharing sessions to transition system ownership and technical operations smoothly to internal cluster IT colleagues.



Qualifications
Core Azure Cloud Seniority: 5+ years of progressive professional experience architecting, building, and operating production solutions within a Microsoft Azure enterprise cloud environment (Strictly Required).

Big Data Engineering Specialization: 5+ years of dedicated, hands-on experience designing and orchestrating automated data integration pipelines utilizing Azure Data Factory (ADF) and Azure Databricks (Strictly Required).

Advanced Programming Polyglot: 5+ years of strong, production-grade development experience writing clean, maintainable code using Python and SQL for data engineering, analytics, and data transformation (Strictly Required).

Medallion Architecture Mastery: Demonstrated professional background organizing, partition-tuning, and managing raw data layers into structured Bronze/Silver/Gold Lakehouse patterns.

Legacy-to-Cloud Migration Footprint: Verified technical capability deconstructing Synapse setups, complex stored procedures, and Parquet formatting to port them safely into Delta Lake formats.

Git & Automation Literacy: High level of comfort running code lifecycle management, managing branching structures, and performing peer reviews within GitHub under a CI/CD workflow.

Soft Skills: Exceptional analytical problem-solving, critical-thinking, and communication capabilities, with a proven history of explaining complex technical trade-offs to cross-functional stakeholders.

Nice to Have:
Prior professional data engineering experience within a Canadian public sector framework or ministry cluster.

Practical knowledge of data governance models utilizing Databricks Unity Catalog.

Baseline familiarity with data layer modeling designed to feed semantic schemas in PowerBI.
