About us:

The Office of Indigenous Initiatives was established in response to the U of T’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission Steering Committee’s final report, Answering The Call: Wecheehetowin. The Office’s mandate is to support and guide the U of T community as it continues to work towards reconciliation. Efforts are directed towards listening, coordinating, advising, and collaborating with academic and non-academic communities in addressing the Calls to Action. The Office intersects with areas such as teaching and learning, student experience, Faculty and staff recruitment and engagement, and community-based research. The Office also conducts a regular environmental scan, produces a report to establish the impact and progress of Indigenous Initiatives on campus, and manages the activities of the Council of Indigenous Initiatives and the Elder’s Circle.

The Office of Indigenous Initiatives currently offers Indigenous Cultural Competency Training across all three campuses. The Indigenous Trainer will work towards supporting and promoting training opportunities for students, faculty, librarians, and staff across all three campuses (virtual and in-person training sessions).


Your opportunity:

Under the direction of the Special Projects Officer, Indigenous Curriculum and Pedagogy, the Indigenous Trainer will operate as part of a team to design and deliver Indigenous cultural competency training and related educational experiences for U of T faculty, staff, and students. This training will help participants better understand the history, issues, and contexts of Indigenous-Canadian relations as well as guide participants towards taking effective action in their unique positions at the university to accomplish the Calls to Action from the report Answering The Call: Wecheehetowin.

The incumbent will be required to develop and deliver Indigenous educational workshops and educational experiences both as a team and individually, in-person and online.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and implementing components of Indigenous educational workshops and educational experiencesindividually and as part of a team
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars; ensuring peer-to-peer interaction and discussion are important parts of workshop design and delivery
  • Draft and edit content for Indigenous educational workshops and educational experiences
  • Conducting post-event evaluation, analysis and recommendations for changes
  • Writing and editing routine documents and correspondence in relation to training and educational experiences
  • Fostering cooperative working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts
  • Keeping well-informed on University programs, policies and procedures and Indigenous issues, the process of settler colonialism, and methods-techniques for effective workshop delivery

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum four years in development and delivery of training programs in the areasof Indigenous cultural competency training, cross cultural communication, anti-racism training, or related experiences
  • Formal training and-or education in: Indigenous history-issues in Canada
  • Working knowledge of learning theories
  • Strong skills as an adult educator
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work under independent initiative
  • In-depth understanding of University environments and community settings
  • Good organizational, interpersonal, conflict mediation, trouble-shooting, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent abilities to set, track, and measure goals including participation targets, learning outcomes, and other key deliverables
