Job description

What is the Opportunity?

Reporting to the General Superintendent, the Superintendent is responsible for providing leadership, supervision and coordination for day-to-day piling and foundation field operations. This includes planning and executing work related to driven piles, drilled shafts/caissons, shoring, excavation support, concrete foundations and associated civil works, while ensuring the safety and productivity of crews and compliance with OH&S and Company policies, procedures and guidelines. The Superintendent is a key participant in the relationship between the company, the workforce, subcontractors, suppliers, engineers, the client and all other project stakeholders.

What You’ll Do Here:

  • Promote, lead and execute a Safety-First culture for all employees, subcontractors and consultants in compliance with the project’s Environmental Health and Safety Program and provincial occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Lead safe work planning for piling and foundation activities, including hazard assessments, FLRAs, critical lift coordination, excavation/trenching controls, underground utility awareness, drill rig and pile driving operations, and mentorship with crews.
  • Provide guidance to team members by leading safety meetings, field-level inspections and task-specific reviews for high-risk foundation work.
  • Provide daily direction for crew allocation, equipment resourcing, pile materials, rebar, concrete, tooling, consumables and material handling requirements.
  • Coordinate and supervise piling and foundation activities, including layout, pre-drilling, pile driving or drilling, casing installation, rebar cage placement, concrete or grout placement, pile cut-off, pile caps, grade beams and related civil works.
  • Track and report production, quality control, resource requirements, pile/drilling records, concrete quantities, material deliveries, equipment utilization and look-ahead needs.
  • Drive quality, efficiency and productivity of piling, foundation and support crews while maintaining safe work execution.
  • Direct Foreperson(s) on productivity issues and monitor work performance, working with the Foreperson(s) and crews to overcome ground condition, access, equipment, sequencing and constructability challenges.
  • Follow project plans, specifications, geotechnical recommendations, pile schedules and budget requirements while ensuring crews perform to meet production and quality goals.
  • Assist Foreperson(s) to translate drawings, specifications, geotechnical information and work requirements into a prioritized daily and weekly work plan.
  • Understand the scope and sequencing of piling and foundation work, plan and prioritize activities, and effectively redirect crews and equipment to minimize downtime on site.
  • Work with the project team to identify labour, equipment and subcontractor requirements, including cranes, drill rigs, pile driving equipment, vibratory hammers, excavators, pumps, compressors, concrete suppliers and testing agencies.
  • Coordinate with survey, engineering, quality, subcontractors and suppliers to support accurate layout, installation tolerances, inspections, testing and timely resolution of field issues.
  • Build and maintain a strong functional team through instruction, training, coaching and team building, with a focus on safe and efficient foundation construction practices.
  • Ensure completed work meets project quality standards, including pile location, elevation, plumbness, embedment, refusal criteria, drilling depth, socket requirements, reinforcement placement, concrete placement and foundation tolerances, as applicable.
  • Oversee the approval of daily production records and reporting on work progress, including:
  • Daily pile driving, drilling, concrete placement, quality control inspection and checklist records.
  • Record and report non-conformances, deficiencies, violations or disciplinary actions in accordance with company and project requirements.
  • HSE inspections and reports specific to piling, foundation, excavation, lifting and equipment-related activities.
  • Project specific forms, inspections, testing records, pile logs, as-built information and tracking requirements.
  • Approve field logs and ensure each Foreperson submits accurate daily records, including quantities, equipment hours, crew time, phase codes and reported issues.
  • Review field logs with the Project Manager/Leads to ensure accuracy of phase codes, production quantities, cost coding and reported project impacts.
  • Drive an inclusive culture to promote equity, welcome different perspectives, and enable career progression by fostering a sense of belonging.

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a supervisory position in the construction industry, with direct experience supervising piling, foundation or deep foundation work on heavy civil infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with piling and foundation scopes such as driven piles, drilled shafts/caissons, helical piles, concrete foundations, pile caps, grade beams, shoring and/or temporary works.
  • Strong understanding of pile layouts, geotechnical conditions, installation tolerances, production tracking, quality control requirements and field documentation for foundation work.
  • Experience coordinating cranes, drill rigs, pile driving equipment, excavations, concrete placement, reinforcing steel, survey, testing agencies and subcontractor scopes.
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, pile schedules, geotechnical reports, lift plans and work packages, and translate them into practical field execution plans.
  • Experience working on large, multi-disciplinary, heavy civil or joint venture projects is an asset.
  • Exceptional ability to multitask in a dynamic and fast-paced field environment while adjusting to changing ground conditions, access constraints, weather, equipment availability and schedule requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills with the ability to lead Foreperson(s), crews, subcontractors and suppliers in a safe, productive and professional manner.
  • Proficient computer skills in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) and the ability to review or complete daily reports, field logs, production tracking and quality records.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to work project schedules which may include night shifts, weekends, overtime and travel to project sites.
