Senior Manager, Transportation Training and Development – Field

Job Summary

The Senior Manager, Transportation Training and Development Field is responsible for providing strategic direction to the Field Training and Development team.

The role leads, coaches and mentors a team of Transportation Training and Development Field Managers and acts as a support to the Campus Transportation Training and Field Operations teams.

The incumbent collaborates with various teams to ensure compliance with safety regulations, consistency across functions and drives continuous improvement in the safety performance.

In addition to overseeing a team of Officers and Managers, the role is accountable for ensuring that the field training is delivered to the highest standard.

Main Responsibilities

Strategic Oversight of Field Transportation Training team

  • Develops and implements a proactive training strategy to ensure transportation employees receive best in class training and development
  • Ensure alignment of safety training initiatives with organizational objectives and regulatory standards
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to integrate safety training and development initiatives into overall business strategies
  • Analyze data and trends to proactively address emerging safety concerns
  • Develop, refine, and communicate training and development policies and procedures
  • Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal safety and training regulations
  • Collaborate with cross-functional departments to address findings and implement corrective actions
  • Oversees the onboarding and mentoring experience for new hire conductors
  • Develops contingency plans to support the ongoing training and development of transportation employees
  • Oversee the progress of the Managers, Transportation Training and Development Field in each area, including development of training and personal development plans
  • Monitor, evaluate and document performance to ensure the quality and accuracy of the course
  • Prepare and present compliance reports and updates to the Director of Transportation Training
  • Provide regular and comprehensive reports to executive leadership on training performance metrics and milestones
  • Collaborate with the Talent Acquisition team to implement strategic initiatives to attract and retain qualified transportation candidates

Maintain Communication with Sr. Field Managers

  • Assess needs coming from the field operations and field training teams
  • Communicate with Senior Leaders regarding any issues and developing action plans to support continued success and development of Transportation employees
  • Act as the principal liaison between the Campus Leadership team and the Field Operation leaders

Program and Curriculum Management

  • Evaluate Field training programs independently or assign Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to evaluate the campus programs, as necessary
  • Modify programs based on feedback from the Transportation function, as needed
  • Validate the delivery of correct materials, including evaluating Officers and Managers and communicating with students directly
  • Oversee the ongoing certification and training needs of Transportation employees across Canada

Project Management

  • Work with vendors and internal SMEs to develop new curriculum and modify programs, as needed
  • Assist vendors, as needed, including providing them the required information in order to produce the desired results
  • Produce and present business cases for new programs, upon request

Working Conditions

The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environments in various weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday.

The work schedule includes a combination of daytime, evening, and overnight hours to support the demands of the business and oversight of the transportation employees.

The role requires occasional travel (up to 40%) within Canada to deliver trainings.

Requirements

Experience

Railway and Project Management

  • Minimum 10 years of railway experience
  • Between 1 to 3 years of project management experience

oExperience with behaviour-based safety training

oExperience in people management*

oExperience in Operations within CN Transportation department*

Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset

Education / Certification / Designation

  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Conductor and Remote Control Operator Certified
  • Locomotive Engineer Certified*
  • Any education for these above would be considered as an asset
