We are seeking a motivated and hardworking individual to join our team as a Heavy Haul Apprentice. This position offers an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience and training while completing the Class 1 Learning Pathway for commercial truck drivers. As an apprentice, you will play a vital role in assisting our team with the operation and maintenance of heavy haul trucks and trailers, learning essential skills, and working alongside experienced professionals to develop your expertise.
Responsibilities
- Engage in structured training and skill development through the Alberta Apprenticeship program to become a certified Heavy Haul Operator.
- Acquire the necessary Q endorsement (air brakes) certification to ensure safe and compliant operation of heavy haul vehicles.
- Assist in loading, unloading, and securing loads on heavy haul trucks while ensuring safety and efficiency during transport.
- Operate the pilot truck to lead and guide the heavy haul convoy, ensuring safe navigation of oversized loads through various routes.
- Perform basic maintenance tasks on heavy haul trucks and trailers, including inspections, repairs, and troubleshooting to ensure optimal performance.
- Gain experience in the operation and maintenance of trailer functions, such as scissoring down, removing hydraulic necks, and other trailer-specific tasks.
- Understand and assist with winch truck operations, including the hydraulic function, to safely secure loads and transport oversized equipment.
- Receive training and hands-on experience in the proper methods for securing equipment with tie downs to ensure safe transport.
- Become familiar with the electronic logbook system, learning how to track hours of service, vehicle inspections, and other operational data to ensure compliance with regulations.
Requirements
- Must be enrolled in or willing to complete the Alberta Apprenticeship program for Heavy Haul Operators.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Q endorsement (air brakes) certification.
- Must be willing to undergo a medical exam and submit the required documentation.
- Passion for heavy haul trucking and a keen desire to learn through hands-on experience.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to perform manual tasks related to heavy haul operations.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and follow safety protocols.
- Previous experience in a construction or oil & gas industry is considered an asset.
- Must possess the following safety tickets: H2S Alive, CSTS, First Aid and TDG.
