Who can apply

• Parks Canada Agency considers applications from students who have legal status to work in Canada. Please indicate in your application the reason for which you are entitled to work in Canada : Canadian citizenship, permanent resident status, or work permit.
• Registered as a full-time or part-time secondary or post‑secondary student in an accredited academic program.
• Participating in adult education and retraining programs at the secondary level, operated under the authority of an accredited academic institution.
• Should meet the minimum age requirement to be employed in the province or territory of work.

Duties

Supports the vegetation program by assisting with terrestrial restoration activities and monitoring. Conducts front and backcountry control and surveys for non‑native vegetation while collecting geospatial data for monitoring purposes. The majority of the work involves mechanical and chemical control of non‑native vegetation (using hand tools, brush saws, herbicides, etc.). Successful applicants must be willing to acquire an assistant applicator license upon hire and apply herbicides in accordance with our Integrated Pest Management Plan (IPMP). The remainder of the work includes restoration activities (soil amendments, seed collection, planting, staking, translocations) and monitoring (transects, ecological health assessments). The position is field based, with the expectation of working in a team environment and spending the majority of time outdoors. Applicants must be comfortable working in remote backcountry settings for extended periods (up to 7 days).

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

Intent of the process

The results may be used in the future to fill other temporary student vacancies that may arise in the Banff Field Unit, in various locations, with full or part‑time hours for various tenures, depending on status of the selected candidate.
