The Software Architect position performs three roles as a technical advisor and software developer, project manager and business analyst. The job provides a bridge between the Defined Contribution (DC) business and the technical solutions delivery teams. This position will report into the global Platforms & Innovation department leadership team whose role is to develop the technology solutions for the Buck business in the USA, Canada and Europe.

The work is to act as a technical advisor on the Defined Contribution (DC) technology solutions to meet the demands of the future, to see the project through to deliver and transition from existing systems.

Prior knowledge of Canadian DC systems at Buck is essential to gain a significant head start on the project.

Technical Solutions role

The position will act as the main technical resource for the local and offshore software engineering teams for maintenance and enhancement of the BASIS product. The role involves collaborating with both business and technology consultants globally or taking the lead on some architectural decisions for the DC product portfolio. The majority of the product portfolio is built using Microsoft technologies such as C#.NET and SQL Server taking advantage of either the MVC or DNN Framework. However, some components, servers or platforms will require re-architecting to take advantage of modern practices and technical advances since they were first delivered. Good technical skills, ability to collaborate and a keen appetite to learn and share is needed in this role. Some of the more complex coding work may need to be undertaken from time to time but usually coding tasks will be allocated to the relevant technology teams. There are no direct resource management responsibilities in this role.

Project Management role

The successful candidate will be responsible for meeting business requirements on a portfolio of mostly web applications and services. The portfolio of projects covers a wide range of DC administration outsourcing and employee benefits tools. At times the role performed will be to assist with the project management and coordination of delivery teams and at other times it will be to take the lead on the same. Almost all project teams are distributed globally so there is always a good mix of talent and ideas. Previous experience working in distributed teams will help. Collaboration and communication skills both technically and in layman’s terms are essential to be successful in this role.

Business Analysis role

The position requires strong knowledge of defined contributions in Canada and a good understanding of the technical aspects and inner workings of defined contribution administration systems. This role is the liaison between the defined contributions business at Buck and the software engineers that build the solutions. Direct analysis of client issues may also be required so good communication skills are needed. Excellent requirements analysis skills as well as proven experience of creating technical specification documents will be required in this role.

Activities

Day to day activities involve working with the local teams, as well as with other IT teams, clients, vendors and business departments either in Canada or abroad.
