About the role

Hybrid or Remote Full-time Senior Level

This role offers the opportunity to manage the tax function for both Canadian and US operations. You'll be responsible for ensuring accurate preparation and filing of Canadian corporate tax returns, maintaining legal records and registrations, and providing oversight for US tax compliance.

As a team player, you'll also work to improve tax efficiency, create strategic tax plans, and mitigate potential risks. To be successful, you'll need strong analytical and communication skills, along with a commitment to staying current with tax legislation in both jurisdictions.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Facilitate and manage the preparation and accurate, timely filing of Canadian federal & provincial income tax, indirect tax & NRWHT returns and other business-related filings.
  • Ensure accurate, timely filing of consolidated US federal, state and local income tax, indirect tax and NRWHT returns and other business-related filings for all US based operations.
  • Direct professional external tax advisors situated in both Canada and the USA, as necessary.
  • Find and implement opportunities for process improvement in company tax procedures.
  • Coordinate preparation of income tax working papers for statutory auditors.
  • Develop and implement strategic tax planning for all necessary federal and provincial / state taxes.
  • Coordinate with members of the finance team as they prepare components of federal income tax returns and other tax documents.
  • Plan for and develop overall return calendar and coordinate timing and inputs with finance team.
  • Maintain effective control procedures over all aspects of the tax process.
  • Manage and facilitate tax authority audits, coordinating with professional advisors as necessary.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory tax law developments, communicate the effects of these developments to management and the finance team and create strategies to capitalize on changes to taxation legislation.
  • Provide support with various internal audits and special tax related projects.
  • Assist ALS client service representatives in responding to client sales tax queries.
  • Manage usage of online tax and legal compliance portals.
  • Manage and mentor members of finance team to greater levels of effectiveness and engagement.
  • Facilitate and manage the corporate tax and legal registrations and licenses at federal, provincial / state and municipal levels.
  • Coordinate maintenance of Canadian corporate minute books.

About you :

  • Extensive corporate tax knowledge in both Canada (essential) and USA (highly desirable).
  • Familiarity with corporate legal compliance and governance.
  • Strong accounting, analytical, and research skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of tax legislation, compliance and procedures for corporations.
  • Familiarity with CAN & USA federal, provincial / state and local reporting requirements.
  • Strong experience with a variety of tax operations and ability to drive process improvements.
  • Strong ability to utilize project management and accounting best practices to organize and prioritize tasks and the tasks of other finance team members.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as the ability to work well with stakeholders and communicate the benefits of tax initiatives.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

Required Qualifications :

  • 5+ years of experience in a tax manager or public accountant role.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a management role.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Current CPA (Certified Public Accountant) registration.
  • University degree in an accounting discipline.
