Organizational Profile
The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is located on the beautiful central east coast of Vancouver Island, incorporating the municipalities of Nanaimo, Lantzville, Parksville, and Qualicum Beach, and seven unincorporated electoral areas that lie between Cassidy to the south and Bowser to the north. The RDN is situated within the traditional territories of several First Nations, including Snuneymuxw, Snaw-Naw-As and Qualicum First Nations and recognizes their rich cultural heritage. The RDN is focused on building strong relationships with these Nations.
The RDN is home to approximately 170,000 people and is growing at a very rapid pace. Growth is due in part to a mild coastal climate, diverse ecosystems, and landscapes from the Salish Sea to rugged mountains, easy access to a range of outdoor recreation, and a high quality of life.
About the Role
Reporting to the Chief Operator, the Wastewater Operator contributes to the effective operation of Wastewater Services for the Regional and Community Utilities Department by ensuring the safe operation and routine preventative and planned maintenance of RDN Wastewater treatment and collection facilities according to permit specifications. This position supports the department by assisting team members in their duties, as required, to meet service expectations, departmental goals, and objectives.
This is an incredible opportunity for an experienced wastewater operator to be a part of the expansion and modernization of the French Creek Pollution Control Centre. The preferred candidate will have a post-secondary diploma in Water & Wastewater Technology, supplemented with an Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) Class III in Wastewater Treatment, with four (4) years of experience at a Class II (or higher) facility and two (2) years of direct responsible charge operation at a Class II (or higher) facility. A current Class 5 BC driver’s license is required. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
The rate of pay for the position will vary based on the EOCP certification level held; Level I : $33.79, Level II : $36.81, Level III : $41.54 per hour. In addition to the base rate, applicants holding current EOCP Wastewater Collection I-IV or Wastewater Treatment IV certification, will receive a $0.75 / hr. premium. The position offers an attractive benefits package as provided within the collective agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.
