Job description

Job Description

AECOM is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Heavy Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the design, integration, and implementation of major mechanical equipment for hydropower facilities and water-retaining structures, including both new developments and rehabilitation/modernization projects.

The systems involved include, but are not limited to, gates and stoplogs, trash racks, hoisting mechanisms, winches, overhead cranes, material handling systems, and associated auxiliary equipment.

You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers, designers, technicians, and project managers, contributing to the successful delivery of complex projects across Canada and, occasionally, internationally. You will also work closely with other engineering disciplines (civil, structural, and electrical), architects, equipment suppliers, and specialized consultants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior technical lead for heavy mechanical systems on hydropower and dam projects.
  • Establish design criteria and engineering basis for mechanical systems and ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Perform or oversee engineering calculations, analyses, and equipment selection.
  • Prepare, review, and approve technical deliverables, including studies, drawings, specifications, contract documents, and cost estimates.
  • Coordinate mechanical engineering activities with civil, structural, and electrical disciplines.
  • Conduct site investigations and field assessments, and incorporate existing site conditions into design solutions.
  • Provide technical support during construction, including shop drawing reviews, responses to RFIs, site inspections, and commissioning activities.
  • Participate in technical meetings with clients, suppliers, contractors, and project partners.
  • Mentor and support the development of junior engineers and technicians.
  • Contribute to the successful delivery of projects by meeting schedule, budget, quality, and health and safety objectives.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in the design of heavy mechanical equipment for hydropower facilities.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ), or eligible for immediate registration.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage complex assignments, and provide sound technical recommendations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in French.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience in the design of heavy mechanical equipment for hydropower facilities.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, to support occasional projects and collaboration outside Quebec.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills with a high attention to detail.
  • Experience using AutoCAD and/or Revit.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Additional Information

  • Sponsorship for Canadian employment authorization is not available for this position.

At AECOM, we are committed to maintaining a secure and trustworthy recruitment process and take any fraudulent hiring activity seriously. To support this commitment, all newly hired employees are required to attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office location as a condition of employment.
