Job description

Key Responsibilities

  • Carefor the captive grizzly bear at GBR through the provision of food, water, hygiene, psychological enrichment, and habitat improvement.
  • Assist the GBR Experience Supervisor and GBR Animal Welfare Coordinator with the design, development, and maintenance of the wildlife habitat, refuge facilities, and interpretive programs.
  • Ensure that all applicable wildlife protocols, procedures, and regulations are followed.
  • Maintain database of bear behavior, habitat statistics, procedural matters, and other factors to ensure that it is accessible for GBR staff, KHMR management, and provincial officials.
  • Control other wildlife near GBR that could affect the captive bear's behavior and/or refuge operations.
  • Maintain professional knowledge as appropriate by fostering relationships with other wildlife professionals and reading any literature pertaining to grizzly bears.
  • Control, capture, and restrain bear as necessary for veterinary care.
  • Help develop and participate in grizzly bear research projects.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in zoology, biology or a related field is desirable, equivalent. experience working directly with wildlife and/or wildlife programs may substitute.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of bear biology and natural history required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Interest in outdoor recreational activities.
    Farm background and competence in basic electrician and carpentry skills desirable.
  • Must currently hold Class 5 driver's license with clean driver’s abstract.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain a Possession Acquisition License (non-restricted).

Working Conditions

  • Must perform computer work in the office, plus manual physical labor at the refuge including lifting, shoveling, raking, brushing, and fence maintenance.
  • Must be physically capable of performing manual labor, standing for prolonged periods, walking over rough terrain, interacting with wildlife, and working in varied mountain weather conditions (rain, wind, heat, cold, snow, insects etc.) for extended periods.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule when required.

  • Competitive wage: $19.89 - $22.89 /hour, dependent on experience
