Scope
The Media Relations Specialist reports to the Director, Communications & Engagement, and provides support to the Communications & Media Relations Lead. This position is responsible for managing media inquiries, building relationships with media outlets, and supporting the promotion of City initiatives through various communication channels. The role involves creating and distributing key communications materials, managing social media platforms, editing and updating the City website, providing logistical support for events, and monitoring media coverage to measure accurate and positive public sentiment. Additionally, the Specialist collaborates with internal teams and assists in crisis communication efforts, while helping to enhance the City's overall communications strategy.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a point of contact for media inquiries, coordinating and ensuring timely, professional responses
- Develop and maintain proactive, positive relationships with all levels of media to ensure fair and accurate coverage of City initiatives.
- Collaborate with the Communications & Media Lead to identify and generate earned media opportunities to enhance the City's brand and increase positive sentiment.
- Arrange interviews for designated City spokespersons, coordinating logistics and interview preparation as needed.
- Monitor media coverage of City activities and initiatives, providing updates and insights on public sentiment and media trends, and opportunities for multimedia storytelling.
- Draft and prepare media releases, statements, advisories, speeches, daily media briefings, podcast and video scripts, and content for the website and social media.
- Work with departmental staff and managers to gather and verify information.
- Provide logistical and communications support for high-profile events, including press conferences, public forums, podcast recordings, video productions and related activities.
- Support the Communications & Media Lead in managing crisis communication efforts, including drafting statements and coordinating responses under tight timelines.
- Work closely with City departments on projects aimed at enhancing the City's communications efforts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
