If so, the Arts and Science department may have the perfect opportunity for you with our new and exciting Arts and Sciences Indigenous Relations Consultant, ASIRC!

The Arts and Sciences Indigenous Relations Consultant (ASIRC) is a critical academic position that promotes, advises, shares knowledge and life experiences to advance and bring awareness in a collaborative manner into teaching practices and curriculum development. The ASIRC instructs classes, and assists, designs and develops curriculum with a collaborative focus to promote and incorporate Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, and life experiences into teaching practices, course work and materials, and leads the effort to Indigenize courses within the Arts and Sciences department. Guided by the principle of miyo wâhkôhtowin (good relations), and working closely with A&S program heads, instructors, and coordinators to design, plan, and implement initiatives that incorporate Indigenous knowledge, history, and ways of knowing into A&S courses. Your strong collaboration and networking skills will assist in fostering cross-departmental collaboration and strengthen inter-departmental relationships.

Reporting to an Arts and Sciences Program Head, the ASIRC will support other A&S program heads and their respective faculties across Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s campuses. I n addition to developing Indigenous Studies courses, teaching, curriculum development, and Indigenization, the ASIRC will :

  • teaches primarily online, with some in-person duties, including face-to-face instruction
  • facilitates the KAIROS Blanket Exercise (training provided) for students?
  • support the professional development of faculty (integrating Indigenous knowledge into teaching practices, curriculum, and other exercises / projects)
  • leads the recruitment and ongoing membership of an Indigenous Advisory Committee, (Indigenous leaders from Saskatchewan and beyond, offering advice on the stewardship of Indigenous Studies courses and the Indigenization of non-Indigenous course content).

Please Note : The position can be based at any of Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s four campus locations : Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Regina, or Moose Jaw, depending on the successful applicant’s preference.

Due to extensive networking and collaborative responsibilities, travel will be required.

Job Duties

1. Transform Education through diverse curriculum development :

  • Assist and support in the development of content for Indigenous studies courses and other courses related to culture and diversity
  • Create and compile resource materials and assessment tools, and develop digital materials (e.g. for Learning Management Systems), etc.
  • Advise on curriculum decisions related to Indigenous content
  • 2. Lead efforts to Indigenize courses and curricula :

  • Collaborate with A&S faculty to incorporate Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, history, and ways of knowing and being into Arts and Sciences courses1
  • Collaborate with other programs and assist with their Indigenization of courses and programs (lead in the efforts to decolonize existing curriculum)
  • Share Indigenous knowledge as a guest speaker in other faculty members’ classes
  • Collaborate with other faculty to incorporate Indigenous teaching and learning activities into their classes
  • 3. Incorporate Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, history, and ways of knowing and being :

  • Contribute to various projects and initiatives with faculty Collaborate with other programs on projects and initiatives
  • Collaborate with the department of Indigenous Strategy on projects and initiatives to support students
  • Facilitate the KAIROS Blanket Exercise
  • Contribute to professional development in furtherance of Indigenization efforts
  • 4. Maintain an Indigenous advisory committee :

  • Lead efforts to recruit Indigenous advisory committee members (Elders, traditional Knowledge Keepers, Indigenous scholars, educators, cultural advocates, community leaders, business leaders, artists, and other cultural practitioners).
  • Organize and lead Indigenous advisory committee meetings
  • 5. Instruct courses in Indigenous Studies, culture, and diversity.

  • Provide instruction as required in both in-person and online formats
  • Manage the classroom ensuring an optimum learning environment
  • Plan and deliver content and learning activities that reflect a culturally diverse community’s values, beliefs, needs, and contributions
  • Provide appropriate evaluation, assessment, and feedback to students
  • Be flexible and responsive to learner needs using appropriate instructional methodologies
  • Respond to curriculum / course demands and make necessary adjustments according to learner needs, such as adult learning principles
  • Be reflective of and responsive to the accommodation of learning needs, including equity groups and diverse learners
  • Demonstrated competence and recent experience in the use of the internet, e-mail, MS Office Suite software and the ability to learn and adapt to changing technology.
  • Note : Within a given academic year, only some of the above initiatives will be assigned. A workload will be assigned in each academic year by the program head based on a working day profile and program needs.

    1 Arts and Sciences (A&S) includes the following main subject areas (in addition to a small number of niche courses not listed here. Communications, Sociology, Psychology, Anatomy / Physiology & Biology, Physics, Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Applications, and Drafting QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE Specific Accountabilities Duties Required Qualifications, Skills and Abilities (QSA) 1. Masters degree (Masters of Education is preferred)

    2. Two years recent and relevant professional or academic experience with Indigenous communities, Indigenous communities, Indigenous advocacy, Indigenization, or Indigenous ways of knowing and being.

    3. One of the following :

    a. The masters degree has an Indigenous specialization, focus, or componet. Community- based post secondary research experience with an Indigenous perspective can satisfy the requirement.

    b. A bachelors degree in Indigenous Studies.

    Skills and Abilities :

  • Welcomes, appreciates and practices Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Reconciliation, (EDI & Reconciliation) in all work and interactions
  • Incorporates Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, history, and ways of knowing and being into courses and curriculum
  • Is connected to their Indigenous community and has experience in developing relationships and working with Indigenous Peoples, Elders, and community members
  • Knowledge and familiarity with Saskatchewan Indigenous communities, organizations, and leaders
  • Experience in planning and coordinating projects
  • Ability to develop curriculum
  • Instructional ability
  • Ability to work as a team member and foster teamwork
  • Effective interpersonal skills, shares knowledge ad life experiences to promote awareness
  • Effective communication skills (written and oral), the ability to speak and write in other Indigenous languages (is seen as an asset)
