Overview

About Us

Based in Nanaimo, The Hazelwood Group is a privately-owned powerhouse operating in construction, manufacturing, and real estate development. Hazelwood Finance keeps the engine running—handling IT, Marketing, HR, Accounting, and Business Development across our companies.

We are looking for a strategic and operational HR leader to join Hazelwood, a diverse group of companies. In this role, you will partner with senior leadership to drive people strategies that support business growth, organizational effectiveness, and operational excellence, while overseeing day-to-day HR and Payroll operations.

Reporting to the VP, Shared Services, you will shape HR frameworks and practices, providing guidance to leaders on workforce planning, succession, talent strategy, and change management. You ensure core HR operations, including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, performance management, compliance, and payroll, are delivered accurately, efficiently, and consistently. A key focus is identifying opportunities to streamline HR and Payroll processes, improve data integrity, enhance operational effectiveness, and elevate the employee experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary HR advisor to executive leadership on workforce planning, organizational structure, succession, and people-related risk.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of group-wide HR policies, frameworks, and programs to ensure effectiveness, scalability, and alignment with best practices and business objectives.
  • Influence senior leaders on change management, talent strategy, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Oversee all core HR operations, including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, performance and attendance management, conflict resolution, and offboarding, ensuring operational excellence, compliance, and process improvements.
  • Provide leadership and oversight to the Payroll function, maintaining accuracy, compliance, and seamless integration with HR operations.
  • Guide managers across business units on HR best practices, employment legislation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support post-acquisition integrations and organizational change initiatives, aligning people practices and onboarding new teams effectively.
  • Provide expertise on labor relations, including interpreting collective agreements, and ensuring compliance with negotiated terms.
  • Oversee benefits programs, including design, administration, and ongoing evaluation, providing recommendations to leadership to optimize employee experience and alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Lead sensitive employee concerns and escalated HR issues, including investigations, resolution recommendations, and identifying systemic issues to strengthen engagement and retention.
  • Maintain and analyze HR metrics (turnover, retention, hiring, compensation trends, employee relations themes) to provide actionable insights for leadership decisions.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing HR team, fostering accountability, growth, and operational excellence.
  • Act as the HR point of leadership for HR team members embedded within individual business units, offering mentorship, oversight, and functional guidance through an indirect reporting structure to ensure cohesive, group-wide alignment.
  • Collaborate with leaders across the organization to provide strategic and operational insight, including HR’s contribution to OH&S responsibilities.
  • Champion a culture of trust, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the HR team, ensuring people practices reflect organizational values and priorities.
  • Lead the planning and execution of key HR-led events and initiatives that support engagement, culture, and organizational alignment, such as Safety Training Week and the annual year-end celebration.

Benefits of Employment – Why work at Hazelwood?

  • Comprehensive group benefits (premiums are 100% employer-paid).
  • GRSP & DPSP with tiered matching:
  • 2% of base salary (0–5 years of service)
  • 4% (5+ years of service)
  • Short-term and long-term disability plans.
  • Priority access to Telus Health Virtual Care (access to a doctor 24/7 anywhere in Canada).
  • Strong team environment that encourages and financially supports continuing education and career advancement.
  • Employee & Family Assistance Program.
  • Annual financial donations to volunteer organizations directly supported by our employees.

Compensation

  • $110,000 to $130,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Eligibility for additional variable pay.

What Success Looks Like

What You Bring

  • 7–10 years of progressive HR experience, including 3–5 years in leadership or management, with proven ability to scale HR practices to support business growth.

  • Strong business acumen, with experience using HR strategies and data to influence organizational decisions, workforce planning, and performance outcomes.

  • Experience supporting unionized and non-unionized environments, with knowledge of labor relations and risk management.
  • Track record in employee relations, conflict resolution, and influencing senior leaders to advance organizational goals.
  • Proficiency with HRIS and payroll systems (e.g., Payworks, ADP, Quickbooks) and advanced Excel skills, using technology and data to streamline processes, generate insights, and support strategic HR decisions.
  • CPHR designation or equivalent professional accreditation is an asset.

  • You notice areas for improvement and implements solutions to make HR processes smoother and more effective.
  • You adapt easily to changing priorities and evolving business needs.
  • You maintain attention to detail while managing multiple priorities.

Working Conditions

  • High autonomy and responsibility for confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities in dynamic environments.
  • Occasional extended hours during deadlines or urgent HR matters.
  • Regular collaboration with senior leaders, managers, and external stakeholders.
  • Must be able to travel to various company locations within BC as needed.
