Description:

Course Description: An introduction to the arts and architecture from antiquity to the present day which emphasizes the deep connection between art and history. This broad overview will examine carefully a selection of works, including real objects and buildings in Toronto, which are representative of the upper-level courses currently offered by the Art History faculty. Special attention is paid to developing essential art historical skills, including the ability to look at, analyze, and write about works of art and architecture. Tutorials provide training in and experience applying the basic principles and vocabulary employed in art-historical scholarship. Frequent short writing assignments and exercises will be based on readings, lectures, and museum or gallery visits to collections in Toronto. No previous knowledge of history of art or architecture is required.

Class Schedule: Online Asynchronous


Sessional Dates of Appointment: May 1, 2026 to July 2, 2026; Final Assessment period June 18-24, 2026.

Please note: This position includes the completion of any course work and marking not finished by July 2, 2026.


Salary:

  • Sessional Lecturer I $9,820.70
  • Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term $10,510.04
  • Sessional Lecturer II $10,510.04
  • Sessional Lecturer Ill $10,760.28

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • MA in Art History or a related field is required; PhD in Art History is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of art and architecture from antiquity to the present day is required.
  • Proven ability to analyze and write about works of art and architecture is required.
  • At least two years of experience creating and marking writing assignments, exercises and/or undergraduate essays in art history or a related field.
  • Evidence of recent teaching effectiveness.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous teaching experience in this or a similar course at the university level.

Description of Duties: This course will use pre-recorded lecture videos designed and created by Art History faculty members. All other normal duties related to the design and teaching of a University-credit course are required, including: developing and publishing the syllabus and marking scheme through Quercus; preparing relevant assignments for student assessment, and (if applicable) setting and invigilating term tests and the final assessment; marking student work and reporting final grades to the university; supervising TAs; maintaining office hours for academic counselling of students.
