Your Opportunity:

Our many libraries have become a vibrant hub where students, faculty and researchers meet to interact with librarians and expert staff, use collections and collaborate. Thousands of people visit Robarts Library on a busy day. Join our award-winning Library Patrol Team and work under the supervision of the Manager - Security, Health & Safety, to help maintain a safe and secure environment in the library community.
Currently recruiting for a Lead Hand - Building Patrol, this position schedules the daily activities, leads, directs, trains, and works with a group of Building Patrol staff members and acts as a liaison to the Manager - Security, Fire, Health & Safety. Also performs the daily duties of a Building Patrol team member.

Typical Duties:

The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of the responsibility involved in this position. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated.

Flexibility of the employee to perform a wide variety of functions is necessary in successfully fulfilling the requirements of this position. The degree to which each employee performs each of the following tasks listed below will vary according to where and when the employee is scheduled to work.

  • Provides direction to and works along with the Building Patrol.
  • Acts as Building Patrol member and performs all duties of such
  • Provides staff schedule to ensure sufficient coverage during hours of operation for various buildings
  • Acts as primary contact for staff regarding issues with shift schedules (ie. Missing shifts due to illness, vacation request)
  • Acts as liaison with the event coordinator for scheduled special events to ensure appropriate coverage
  • Provides instruction to patrol staff regarding specific responsibilities when assigned to provide access to or to accompany contractors.
  • Prepares time sheets for authorization by the manager and submission to HR/Payroll for processing
  • Provides security systems ID and PIN numbers to patrol staff
  • In consultation with the manager, recommends and updates operational procedures outlining daily duties for Building Patrol staff.
  • Assists the manager in addressing complaints from Supervisors and Duty Supervisors about Building Patrol Staff
  • Performs system audit checks and quarterly checks of alarm systems and PA systems, emergency call boxes and elevator phones
  • Serves as a contact for the vendor alarm systems and administers access for users to the alarm systems and keeps a log for management and audit purposes
  • Performs periodic checks to make sure all cameras are working properly and the date/time stamp is accurate.
  • Responsible for placing service calls for any issues with the CCTV system.
  • Responsible for viewing, retrieving and saving footage from CCTV system on an as need and authorized basis.
  • Provides reports which accurately note the cameras and times of the pertinent sections of footage. Provides snapshots of suspects as needed.
  • Programs and activates new and replacement photo access cards and generic access cards as authorized
  • Creates and programs door unlock event schedules upon request.
  • Creates new user access profiles.
  • Places orders for UTL Patrol supplies, 1st aid cabinets, staff uniforms, and office supplies within established guidelines and budget and maintains inventory/record.
  • Ensures that the guidelines as well as the Library Conduct Regulations are adhered to.
  • Assists in creating and programming elevators for Holiday and extended hour schedules.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent combination of education and experience. First Aid training required. Courses or Diploma in Police Foundations anasset.

Experience:

  • Four (4) years of related work experience. Demonstrated leadership ability. Previous supervisory experience an asset.

Other:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Security Guard Licence issued by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
  • Must possess and maintain Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification through a recognized provider.
  • Must maintain a clean criminal record.
  • Ability to lead, direct and train others; strong administrative skills; ability to prioritize; strong judgement and analytical skills
  • Effective oral and written English communication skills
  • Demonstrated good work performance and attendance record, and must be punctual.
  • Must be tactful and conscientiously aware of good public relation protocols.
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to work with minimal supervision; must possess excellent oral communication skills, diplomacy and tact, conflict management skills; ability to deal calmly with angry or upset individuals; understanding of diversity and equity issues
  • Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with library patrons and other employees. Must be confident and effective in working alone, responsible, mature and decisive.
