Job description

IT Network Specialist

Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation (API) brings life‑saving research to the real world by helping life‑science innovators bridge the gap between academic research and commercial product development. We are driven, compassionate and laser‑focused on making a dramatic positive impact with everything we undertake.

When you join API, you become part of a rapidly growing team that is creating collaborative opportunities to commercialize Canadian life‑science discoveries, increasing the amount of commercial research and development in the country and supporting Alberta as a key pillar in Canada’s life‑science sector.

We are seeking an experienced IT Network Specialist to implement and maintain servers, firewalls, switches and storage systems for our new GMP facility. The ideal candidate will ensure that our network infrastructure is scalable, secure and aligned with industry standards while supporting our organizational goals. This hands‑on position includes firewall management, server installations, cable patching, and monitoring VMware‑based cloud infrastructure, along with other network operations tasks. The successful candidate will also manage the day‑to‑day IT operations for the GMP facility, supporting the success of our teams by ensuring the smooth operation and efficiency of lab infrastructure.

Note : This position requires full‑time on‑site presence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary Subject‑Matter‑Expert for network infrastructure in the GMP facility, ensuring all systems are designed, implemented and maintained to meet business needs and industry standards.
  • Implement and maintain servers, firewalls, switches and storage systems, ensuring optimal functionality, performance and security.
  • Manage and maintain all lab IT equipment within the GMP facility, including computers, servers, software, licenses, networks and peripherals. Ensure all systems are operational and well‑maintained to support day‑to‑day operations.
  • Monitor and manage VMware‑based cloud infrastructure (vSphere), ensuring the performance, reliability and security of virtualised environments.
  • Oversee network performance, security and reliability, making improvements as necessary. Ensure firewalls, routing and switching configurations meet organisational security standards.
  • Support the smooth operation of the GMP facility’s IT systems, ensuring efficient lab infrastructure operation. Provide direct technical support to internal teams, troubleshooting and resolving network and IT‑related issues in a timely manner.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate documentation of network configurations, processes and security protocols. Ensure compliance with industry standards and organisational policies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science or a related field (required).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the IT field (required).
  • Proven experience in network infrastructure management, including server, firewall, switch and storage maintenance (required).
  • Experience with VMware‑based cloud infrastructure (vSphere, NSX, vCloud) (required).
  • Hands‑on experience managing IT systems within a regulated environment (such as GMP) (required).
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, VMware Certified Professional) are an asset.
  • Familiarity with Computer System Validation (CSV) principles and compliance requirements (e.g., GxP, 21 CFR Part 11) is an asset.
  • Experience supporting validated systems, ensuring compliance with audit and documentation standards is an asset.
  • Personal Competencies

  • Proven experience in developing and executing plans, meeting deadlines and operating under tight time constraints.
  • Self‑confident, outgoing and able to communicate effectively with management and staff.
  • Strong customer focus with a demonstrated ability to work seamlessly with business sponsors and technologists.
  • Exhibits curiosity, a commitment to learning and exploring new technology.
  • Positive outlook and able to effectively receive and communicate feedback.
  • Fosters a transparent, honest and positive team environment.
  • Results‑oriented and process driven, with high expectations of self and team.
  • Working Conditions

  • Required travel between Edmonton API sites.
  • This position requires you to be on site.
  • Additional Required Documents
