ABOUT THE ROLE Reporting to the Director, Roads, Traffic and Fleet Operations, this position is responsible for the planning and management and maintenance of the Region’s network of roads, including cycling and pedestrian facilities with Regional road allowances where applicable, as well as facilities and staff, to comply with provincially legislated standards; allocating internal and external resources within approved funding programs; acting as the Region’s technical expert on road maintenance issues including legal deputations; presenting recommendations of management to increase efficiency.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
• Manages activities of Regional Road Districts to maintain road surfaces, roadside safety barriers, signs, noise barriers, storm sewers, shoulders and boulevard areas in good repair and ensure compliance with provincially legislated standards.
• Oversees implementation and provides input for operations of internal resources and external contractors in performance of maintenance and operational services required to meet the minimum maintenance standards of Region roads.
• Oversees compliance inspections of all approved activities on Region roads as it relates to control and use of road corridors, as covered by encroachment approvals.
• Participates in Branch planning and formulation of strategic initiatives for service improvements.
• Makes recommendations for Branch direction and goals and development of policies/procedures.
• Manages financial planning, budget preparation, control and monitoring of the roads maintenance districts, with responsibility for overall Roads Maintenance budget.
• Supervises staff, including recruitment, selection, hiring, assigning work, determining training and development needs, coaching, mentoring, conducting performance appraisals and determining/recommending disciplinary action up to and including dismissal in accordance with collective agreements, Regional policies and practices.
• Responds to requests from public and partner inquiries in timely and sensitive manner; provides information to Corporate Communications department for responses to social media inquiries.
• Develops customer service strategies to respond to internal and external needs as appropriate.
