About VolunteerConnector

Started in Calgary, Alberta 70 years ago, the Volunteer Centre of Calgary has strengthened communities through our leadership in supporting individuals in their desire to connect with and support their community through volunteering. We also believe in providing essential volunteer services to grassroots and small nonprofit organizations that rely on volunteers to achieve their mission. Our strength is in listening to the needs of community and putting the volunteer at the centre of all we do, helping connect people with their passions.

Our reach is across Canada and growing every day. We can do this partly through our online platform providing a digital solution for volunteer engagement. We believe that the power of volunteers is what makes people feel connected, supported and appreciated.

Position Summary :

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for staff, programs, expansion, and execution of the VolunteerConnector’s mission. The ED oversees financial management, develops policies and procedures, and ensures compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. This position also collaborates with the Board of Directors, develops strategic plans, and represents the organization to the community and voluntary sector. The role will drive the organization’s success and make a positive impact in the communities they serve.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership :

  • Develop the mid-term strategic plan in collaboration with the staff and Board of Directors.
  • Implement the strategic plan, translating it into actionable operational plans.
  • Promote the organization’s strategy internally and ensure the organization’s operational practices, plans, objectives and policies support the strategy.

People Leadership :

  • Serve as a servant leader to the organization’s staff, providing guidance, motivation, and support to help them succeed in their roles. Promote a culture of open communication, collaboration and positive working relationships.
  • Model and promote the organization’s values and culture, setting a high standard for ethical and effective behaviour in all interactions and create a diverse and inclusive workplace.
  • Partner Relations :

  • Establish and nurture strong, collaborative relationships with partners, e.g., community and sector stakeholders, funders, donors.
  • Analyze volunteer sector trends and preferences to identify opportunities for partnership, collaboration and inform planning.
  • Identify and cultivate an active, robust funder and donor pipeline to achieve significant growth targets consistent with organization goals and strategic plans.
  • Develop and implement donor engagement strategies, including impact reports, case studies and relevant communications to keep donors informed and increase funding sustainability.
  • Board Relations :

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to ensure the organization is fulfilling its mission, vision and strategic plan, facilitating timely & constructive discussion of key concerns facing the organization.
  • Provide comprehensive reporting on all metrics on a regular basis, including but not limited to financial, operational, strategy, partner reporting, etc..
  • Financial Leadership :

  • Oversee the organization’s financial management in partnership with the Board Treasurer ensuring the organization is financially sound and operating with financial prudence.
  • Work with staff to develop and oversee the organization’s annual budget.
  • Monitor financial performance on an ongoing basis and identify opportunities for revenue growth and cost savings.
  • Operational Leadership :

  • Oversee the organization's daily operations, ensuring efficient administrative management, program development, resource allocation and compliance.
  • Develop and lead the implementation of an effective operating model that yields revenue and financial self-sufficiency.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of data-driven solutions to address volunteer recruitment, leveraging technical expertise and partnerships to maximize impact.
  • Create and maintain positive volunteer user and community organization partner experiences.
  • Risk Management :

  • Identify and monitor all strategic, operational, financial and people risks facing the organization on a regular basis.
  • Experience, Education and Fit

  • 10+ years experience working in operational, marketing, business development areas.
  • Experience in non-profit organizations, with knowledge of current community challenges and opportunities as they relate to the organization’s mission and strategy.
  • 5 years senior leadership experience, including financial planning and management, people leadership skills and communication & public speaking skills.
  • Significant exposure to fund development, including developing funding strategies, grant proposal writing and building relations with funders and donors.
  • Undergraduate degree in Commerce, Business Administration, Management or related areas.
  • Willing to work in a remote office environment.
