Position Summary

The Utility Person is essential in maintaining the reliability, safe condition, and cleanliness of transit-related facilities. The Utility Person provides support to municipal transit operations by maintaining bus shelters, performing snow removal, and assisting mechanics by picking up parts.

Utility Person Schedules:
This temporary position is governed by the Collective Agreement and includes a 2 x 8-hour shifts every Saturday and Sunday (6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.). Additional hours will be scheduled between Monday and Friday.

Current Shift Times:

  • Saturday and Sunday: 6:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
  • Monday to Friday (Floating Shifts per operational need):

* NOTE: Schedule and hours may change as bus service dictates or operationally required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform minor repairs to bus shelters, including glass replacement, painting, and general upkeep.
  • Maintain and clean transit shelters and stops including trimming of grass and snow removal to ensure safe passenger access.
  • Maintain the primary transit facility, including cleaning and minor maintenance and repairs.
  • Assist with cleaning and sanitizing product inventory control.
  • Monitor and report any damage to municipal transit infrastructure, ensuring timely repairs.

Education & Certifications:

  • N/A

Experience:

  • Ontario Class “D” Driver’s License, with a “Z” endorsement.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in facility maintenance, repair work, or general labor, preferably in a transit or fleet environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of hand tools, minor repairs, and facility cleaning and maintenance.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and address maintenance issues proactively.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with transit staff and supervisors.
  • Safety Awareness: Understanding of health and safety regulations related to maintenance and transit operations and the safe use of cleaning agents.
  • Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks and complete work within required timelines.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills for documenting repairs and collaborating with team members.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in outdoor environments.
  • Occasional flexibility needed for after hours incidents.
  • This role involves potential exposure to cleaning agents, vehicle exhaust, and various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and inclement weather.
  • Cognitive demands include prioritizing tasks efficiently and maintaining focus while completing repetitive tasks.
  • Physical demands include lifting, bending, carrying, and moving objects, prolonged standing or walking.

  • Successful reference check (two work-related references, with a minimum of one being a direct supervisor)
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check
  • Satisfactory Driver’s Abstract
  • Proof of certifications
