The Cowichan Valley School District invites applications for the role of Manager of Facilities. The Region Situated in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on southern Vancouver Island, the Cowichan Valley School District is located between Victoria and Nanaimo. The Cowichan Valley School District extends north to Saltair, south to Spectacle Lake on the Malahat and west to the Lake Cowichan region. We are honoured to be learning on the ancestral and unceded territories of the Quw’utsun, Malahat, Stz’uminus, Penelakut, Halalt, Ts’uubaa-asatx and Lyackson peoples. The District serves a student population of approximately 8,700 students of which 1,700 identify as Indigenous. The School District has 23 school sites and an annual budget of over $111 million. Reporting to the Director of Operations, in this excluded position, the Facilities Manager is responsible for planning and managing maintenance operations, as well as assisting with the implementation of the capital projects for district owned facilities. The Facilities Manager plans and manages the human, supply and technical resources required to ensure the development, supervision and implementation of programs to deliver safe and well-maintained schools and other board facilities. Duties and Responsibilities : Is responsible for the efficient implementation and management of maintenance programs and services. Coordinates and oversees the activities of a variety of resources including unionized staff, contractors and consultants. Assists with facilitating the implementation of major and minor capital projects Plans, organizes, supervises and determines the logistics of human resources, equipment, materials and outside contractors for maintenance programs and services. Ensures projects and services are completed to school district standards. Develops and maintains effective use of the Computerized Maintenance Management systems to ensure procedures and protocols are followed. Ensures compliance with a variety of regulations including WorkSafe BC and building codes. Establishes training requirements for maintenance and custodial staff. Participates in the establishment and control of the department’s operating and annual facilities grant budgets, cost accounting and forecasts. Has vision to develop the department’s strategic and operations plans. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with district administrators, district staff, consultants, and others on matters relating to building maintenance, alterations, functional improvements, repayable work requests, and site upgrades. Works closely with management team members and shares responsibility for several HR administrative processes including new hire administration, health and safety and labour relations. To be successful you will have… Leadership skills and experience in a unionized environment. Experience dealing with human resource related issues such as : grievances, employee performance, discipline, leaves of absence, time and schedule management etc. Proven fiscal management knowledge. Knowledge of facility maintenance and custodial practices. Knowledge of WSBC Regulations. Knowledge of capital and fiscal planning. WHMIS and the ability to train. Strong organizational, supervisory and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated project management experience. Excellent communication skills. Experience working in the K-12 education or public sector an asset Education and Experience : A post-secondary diploma in a relevant field supplemented by a Building Services Worker certificate. A minimum of five years of supervisory experience in a unionized environment. Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office. Demonstrated ability to problem solve technical and mechanical issues. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills. The ability to lead by example while demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement through best practices and strategic planning in the field of cleaning and custodial services. Trade Certificate or Red Seal in any of the following considered an asset : Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, Carpentry. Project Management training / certification considered an asset. Equivalent training and experience may be given consideration The salary range for this position is $100,080.00 to $125,100.00 per year including a comprehensive benefits package and Municipal Pension.
