Job description

Job Description

This Systems Engineer role focuses on supporting multidisciplinary engineering teams responsible for vehicles and their subsystems, with a strong emphasis on functional safety, requirements management, and verification and validation. You will establish and evolve systems engineering processes aligned with the V-model, lead safety concept development and risk assessments, manage functional safety documentation and compliance, and build a world-class testing and validation capability, including HIL/SIL and automated test equipment. You will also act as a design owner for key safety-related products, including an innovative radar-based safety system and its integration with mobile equipment and remote control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Support all engineering teams responsible for over 30 vehicle types and all associated subsystems, ensuring a consistent systems engineering approach.
  • Establish, evolve, and execute internal systems engineering processes aligned with the Engineering V-model, from requirements generation through design, implementation, verification, and validation.
  • Perform systematic reviews of international and regional standards relevant to mobile equipment and functional safety.
  • Review customer specifications, use cases, and operational scenarios to generate clear, testable system and safety requirements.
  • Lead the development of safety concepts and risk assessments for vehicle systems and subsystems.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary mechanical, electrical, and software teams to define safety-critical functions and appropriate risk reduction measures.
  • Apply structured functional safety frameworks, such as the IEC 16-step Safety Lifecycle, to guide the development process.
  • Use formal risk assessment methodologies to identify hazards, evaluate risks, and define safety functions and performance levels.
  • Own the design of safety functions, ensuring they meet required performance levels (., PLr, SIL) and integrate effectively with vehicle and control systems.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of system architectures, configurations, and engineering processes to support traceability and audit readiness.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant national and international regulations and industry best practices for functional safety and mobile equipment.
  • Develop and maintain safety-related work products, including Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS) and Safety Validation Plans, using structured requirements management tools.
  • Ensure audit readiness by providing clear evidence of conformity through rigorous documentation, traceability, and verification artifacts.
  • Establish test cases linked directly to requirements within the chosen toolset to ensure complete coverage and regulatory compliance.
  • Execute verification and validation tests, document results, and provide timely feedback to design teams to drive design improvements.
  • Maintain and improve the test laboratory, aligning test methods with international testing standards and maintaining a strong focus on safety.
  • Regularly review and update verification and validation statuses, ensuring systems are always ready for internal and external audits.
  • Oversee the creation of verification artifacts, such as fault tree analyses and other safety analyses, ensuring alignment with required safety integrity levels.
  • Use computational tools such as Sistema to validate reliability metrics, including MTTFd and DCavg, for system components and safety functions.
  • Lead the establishment of a world-class testing facility and methodology for all testing activities, including the creation of automated test equipment (HIL, SIL, and simulation boards).
  • Act as product design owner for safety systems, an area guarding system using radar sensors to monitor a detection zone between a remote-controlled vehicle and its operator.
  • Define and refine the MSS detection zone behavior so that any encroachment from either the operator side or vehicle side triggers immediate braking and brings the vehicle to a safe stop.
  • Own the mechanical, electrical, and software design of the radar barrier device, associated Wi-Fi access points, and their integration with vehicles and radio remote control systems.
  • Collaborate closely with vehicle engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of safety systems with existing and new mobile equipment platforms.
  • Support continuous improvement of systems engineering, functional safety, and testing processes across the organization.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience in systems engineering, including application of the Engineering V-model across the full product lifecycle.
  • Hands-on experience with functional safety, including safety concept development, risk assessment, and design of safety functions.
  • Strong capability in test design, including creation of test cases directly linked to requirements.
  • Experience with verification and validation activities for complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in requirements management, including structuring, tracing, and maintaining requirements throughout the lifecycle.
  • Practical experience using requirements management tools such as DOORS or Jama (or comparable platforms).
  • Ability to apply formal functional safety frameworks, such as the IEC 16-step Safety Lifecycle.
  • Experience using computational tools such as Sistema to evaluate reliability metrics like MTTFd and DCavg.
  • Knowledge of sensors and their application in safety-related systems.
  • Familiarity with mobile equipment and vehicle systems, particularly in heavy or off-highway applications.
  • Ability to maintain detailed documentation of system architecture, configurations, and safety work products.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret standards and customer specifications.
  • Effective collaboration skills for working with cross-disciplinary mechanical, electrical, and software teams.
