Good Shepherd is preparing to launch a new, innovative shelter that will provide emergency accommodation to individuals and domestic partnerships currently living in encampments - we are seeking a Director.

This housing-focused shelter program, will offer stand-alone units for residents (and their pets) on a City-owned site at Tiffany and Barton Streets. The program team will provide intensive, adaptive supports and services to residents with highly complex barriers to finding and sustaining housing in the community.

How You Will Make an Impact

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director enhances the dignity and quality of life of clients by providing safe, respectful and recovery supported environments in which people with lived experiences of mental health, trauma, homelessness, addiction, mental health issues, and substance use concerns can live healthy and independent lives in their community.

  • Carry out all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Mission and Values of Good Shepherd Non-Profit Homes.
  • Provide a work ethic in leadership and role modelling of behaviors that demonstrates the Mission, Vision and Values of Good Shepherd Non-Profit Homes.
  • Ensure Shelter programs are delivered in a dignified, culturally competent and respectful manner that reflects the charism of Good Shepherd Non-Profit Homes and an integrated anti-racism / anti-oppression framework.
  • Direct and supervise day-to-day operations of Shelter programs and ensure that the highest quality of care and support is provided and maintained.
  • Act as an important communication center for staff, students, volunteers and service users for the efficient and effective communication of information necessary to assist clients.
  • Recruit and retain qualified staff and maintain effective employee relations consistent with the Mission and Values of the Good Shepherd Non-Profit Homes.
  • Provide effective performance feedback to staff on an ongoing basis; prepare and conduct regular formal performance evaluations and make recommendations for discipline and / or termination where necessary
  • Comply with the established rules of operation, procedures, policies and codes of conduct.
  • Comply with work scheduling and attendance requirements according to policy and practices.
  • Respect and protect the confidentiality of service user information, as well as all other information that is sensitive in nature to the operation of programs, Good Shepherd Non-Profit Homes, staff, students, volunteers and others.
  • Represent Good Shepherd Non-Profit Homes and its services in a positive manner within programs and community settings.
  • Ensure that all Shelter programs meet applicable standards, legislation, accreditation and funder requirements.
  • Identify service trends and gaps and work towards equitable responses.
  • Contribute to the overall functioning of Good Shepherd as a member of the senior management team.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with health care, community social service agencies, government bodies, police services and other stakeholders to address issues that impact the lives of people served by Shelter programs.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and program staff. Provide feedback and make proposals to the senior management team regarding policy, procedures and working conditions.
  • Maintain proper records that comply with relevant federal and provincial laws / regulations, funder requirements and sector standards.
  • In conjunction with Finance department, prepare operating budgets and supplementary requests as necessary. Administer funds for the operation of TB Shelter within the framework approved by the Board
  • Provide regular reports on the program operation to the Chief Operating Officer (COO).
  • Purchase equipment and supplies within budgetary restraints and maintain inventory records. And as per policy, where significant capital purchases are required, advise and seek approval of the COO or the CEO.
  • Observe all Good Shepherd health and safety rules and work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations
  • Perform any other duties related to the Ministries of the Good Shepherd as directed by the COO or delegate.

What You'll Bring to Our Team

  • Diploma and / or a Degree in a health / human services discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years progressive management experience in the housing / homelessness sector
  • Experience in program set-up / development
  • Experience in working in higher risk settings and / or with clients impacted by chronic / acute barriers to sustaining safe housing
  • Demonstrated skills in crisis management
  • Strong HR management skills
  • Commitment to working within trauma-informed, Harm Reduction and AR-AO frameworks
  • Commitment to Housing First
  • Experienced in engaging and collaborating with diverse health and human services stakeholders to promote optimal client outcomes
  • Ability to engage with people with lived / living experience of trauma, homelessness, addiction, mental health issues, poverty etc. and integrate their knowledge into service provision
  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining highest standard of data collection and documentation
  • Innovative thinker, confident decision-maker, and mission and values driven
  • Ability to work in an environment that accommodates pets / animal
  • Fluency in a language in addition to English an asset
