Job description

This position will work closely with the Board of Directors to uphold and expand the organization’s commitment to supporting those impacted by an acquired brain injury, supporting the need to overcome limitations, reconnect, rebuild, and thrive in the community.

Working collaboratively with staff while reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will provide leadership, direction, and vision while managing the organization’s contractual obligations, administration, and finances.

Responsibilities : Leadership

Ensure the organization’s activities align with its vision, mission, and mandate

  • Promote and translate the organization’s vision, mission and mandate to internal and external interested parties, partners, the public and media
  • Oversee all operational and human capital resources of the organization in an effective and efficient manner
  • Manage contracts and meet funding body requirements, including accreditation
  • Develop and execute short- and long-term strategies
  • Work alongside senior management to oversee program management, including staff relationships, hiring, and reporting requirements
  • Manage facility operations, including key relationships

Strategy, Planning & Execution

Develop the organization’s strategic and annual plan in partnership with the Board

  • Monitor and respond to progress against strategic plan ensuring operational implementation and adjustments as necessary
  • Promote collaboration and partnership with external partners including government agencies
  • Financial Management

    Develop and execute an annual operating budget aligned with overall organizational direction and strategic direction as approved by the Board

  • Oversight of financial audits and compliance
  • Monitor revenue and expenses, reporting significant variances to the Board
  • Ensure comprehensive financial reporting including financial statements
  • Manage signing authority as per policy.
  • Ensure transparent stewardship of donations
  • Ensure all regulatory and reporting requirements are met
  • Donor Relations & Fundraising

    Ensure the organization has a diversified mix of proactive fundraising revenue initiatives

  • Develop strategic goals for existing and new philanthropic revenue streams
  • Develop fundraising targets and timelines
  • Stay informed of emerging issues and trends of non-profit and healthcare sectors
  • Establish and maintain positive communications and relationships with existing, new or prospective donors and partners
  • Communications & Events

    Act as inspiring spokesperson for the organization ensuring strategic messaging aligns with goals and focus

  • Responsible for communications marketing and media plans including campaigns and key stories
  • Ensure transparent, two-way communication across the organization and with volunteers, donors and other interested parties
  • Keep the Board informed of significant activities, issues, and trends that may impact operations
  • Responsible for donor and organization correspondence including solicitation materials, newsletters, acknowledgments, emails, etc.

  • Administration & Policy

    Ensure effective policy and procedures are in place and enforced for operational effectiveness

    Staff Supervision & Contractor Management

    Provide effective leadership and direction to all staff and volunteers

  • Lead and manage direct reports in all aspects of employee lifecycle including recruiting, onboarding, training and performance management.
  • Assist with staff hiring and training
  • Plan and lead staff meetings in collaboration with the Leadership Team
  • Oversee and manage contractors including drafting and negotiating, execution, monitoring and termination of contracts.
  • Board Relations

    Lead Board of Directors’ engagement, prepare reports and ensure effective governance

  • Communicate effectively with the Board ensuring timely delivery of information necessary for the Board to function effectively and make informed decisions
  • Provide recommendations to the board related to strategic initiatives, policy changes, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Board Chair as necessary
  • Qualifications : Education :

    Post-secondary education in business, communications or human services or related discipline

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Willingness to upgrade skills as needed
  • Experience : Required Experience

    Minimum of 3 to 5 years in a senior leadership role with the demonstrated ability lead effectively

  • Experience in not-for-profit environment
  • Financial management experience including reporting and analysis
  • Preferred Experience

    Leadership experience in not-for-profit sector, Board or governance experience

  • Experience in disability or healthcare services sector
  • Experience in strategic planning, execution and policy development
  • Fund Development, including grant writing expertise, and communications expertise, including acting as a spokesperson
  • Skills and Abilities :

    Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage respectfully and clearly

  • Excellent organizational, critical thinking, planning, and problem-solving skills
  • Proven networking and relationship-building skills at a senior level
  • Ability to relate to and engage diverse individuals and organizations
  • Knowledge of critical business principles and practices
  • Strong organizational / administrative and budgeting skills that align with time management skills and the ability to efficiently set and meet priorities
  • Strong leadership, people management, and conflict resolution skills with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive, and service-minded style
  • Fund Development experience is an asset
  • Computer skills and proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.

    Familiarity with the health and social services sectors

  • Understanding of disability culture, advocacy, policy, and legislation
  • Experience working with persons with physical and / or developmental disabilities
  • Effective and engaging public speaker and presenter

    Compensation : $80 – 90k annually (commensurate with experience). Holidays and benefits package included as well a benefit package and personal time.
