The Distribution Automation team helps utilities modernize the grid and improve system reliability by testing, validating, and refurbishing equipment such as voltage regulators, reclosers, capacitor bank controllers, and automated switchgear. They also provide pre‑commissioning, integration testing, SCADA verification, firmware validation, and remote field support to ensure smooth installation and efficient troubleshooting. Their work supports utilities in deploying smarter, more reliable distribution systems.
The Role
Performs a variety of set ups and tests on electrical equipment, components and cables.
What you will do
1. Sets up and carries out electrical tests under the supervision of an engineer or technologist.
2. Performs laboratory measurements following established procedures and records the results.
3. Operates computers and test instruments as required for testing. Performs routine repairs, maintenance and calibration of electrical test equipment, tools and instruments.
4. Builds or modifies test jigs and support structures to be used for electrical tests.
5. Specifies and purchases materials and equipment needed for routine operation of electrical test labs.
6. Maintains test facilities in a safe and organized condition.
7. Maintains logbooks and files to document tests performed, operating procedures, equipment calibration, etc.
8. Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties which do not affect the rating of the job. This includes the performance of duties across disciplines in a job of the same or lower job group.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities :
What you bring
Certificate of Technology from an Institute of Technology in Electronics (power / control option), Electrical, Power, Telecommunications, Instrumentation or Automation disciplines with preference given to the discipline directly relating to the position or lab.
Two (2) years of related experience working in a lab setting up and performing tests on a variety of electrical equipment, components and cables.
Working Conditions
Majority of the day is spent in laboratory conditions with possible exposure to fumes, odors, hazardous materials, and electrical hazards. Work involves regular risk of contact with electrical shock, chemicals, burns, and potential slips or falls. The role also requires being on your feet for most of the day.
Please be advised that this role has been assessed as safety sensitive and pre-qualification alcohol and drug testing will be required as a pre-condition to employment.
