The Surveyor is responsible for leading a survey crew and completing a wide range of surveying activities in support of road, bridge, and highway maintenance projects. This role supports project planning, design, cost estimation, and on‑site construction by conducting precise field surveys, preparing related documentation, and performing final quantity measurements for construction projects.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Performing topographical surveys for road planning and design.
- Laying out vertical and horizontal highway grades, cross sections, right‑of‑way limits and property boundaries.
- Monitoring construction projects and verifying with project managers that the work is meeting the survey requirements as outlined in the design drawings.
- Setting grades for pipe installations such as storm sewers and cross‑culverts.
- Reviewing design drawings and plans and verify survey data for accuracy and achievability.
- Collecting elevation data for centerline profiles, including sight‑distance determinations.
- Calculating volumes for contractor and landowner payments.
- Surveying material stockpiles to determine quantities.
- Uploading, downloading, and managing data across various survey instruments.
- Maintaining and managing hardware and software for survey equipment.
- Communicating survey information and transferring data to internal staff and external
- consultants.
- Providing recommendations to engineering staff for any discrepancies or errors.
- Locating and marking roadway centerlines.
- Setting up project benchmarks for future surveying
- Preparing and drawing centerline profiles and cross‑sections.
- Supervising the survey crew, including reviewing timesheets and completing annual performance evaluations.
- Clearing minor brush and small trees as required to perform surveys.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must have successful completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
- Graduation from a recognized Surveying Technology program with strong training and experience on the use of Total Station, Satellite Based Positioning Systems (i.e. GPS) and automatic level equipment
- Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered
- Experience analyzing engineering/architectural drawings would be considered an asset
- Must have considerable experience in the field of highway construction and in laying out horizontal and vertical alignments and structures
- Must have previous supervisory experience. Leadership training will be considered an asset
- Must have a valid driver's license with clean abstract
- Must have a Traffic control mangers certification
- Must have Safety training (WHMIS, confined spaces awareness, first aid/CPR etc.)
- Must have strong mathematical and problem-solving skills
- Must be able to use GPS instruments and be able to process (input/output) survey data
- Should be proficient in word processing, mapping and email programs
- Must have good written and oral communication skills as well as good organizational and time management skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to plan and think strategically and work collaboratively
- The successful incumbent must provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Records Check, prior to employment.
- The successful incumbent must provide a current hearing test, prior to employment.
- A good previous work and attendance record is required.
