Student Residences and Ancillary Operations

One Year Contractual Position; Part-time)

The Residence Life Office is responsible for the educational and social aspects of life in Memorial University's residences. Paton College, Macpherson College and Burton's Pond apartments are more than just a convenient place for our students to live; they are a dynamic and diverse community wherein our students are given the opportunity to thrive and develop inside and outside of the classroom. Paton College was rebuilt and renovated in 2015 and primarily offers a home for students who are in their first year of studies or away from home for the first time along with returning students. Paton College also offers Living Learning Communities : areas within the residence where students with similar interests or academic programs live together on the same floor or area in residence. Opened in 2014, Macpherson College has two wings, each home to approximately 250 students, typically composed of both first-year and returning independent students in their second year and beyond. Rooms are suite-style with private bedrooms and semi-private washrooms. Burton's Pond offers apartment-style living to senior students, graduate students and families within an independent living community.

DUTIES

The Residence Coordinator is our live-in, part-time employee who provides support, guidance, and direction for the 100+ residents (and student staff, as applicable). Reporting to the Supervisor of the Residence Life Office, the Residence Coordinator is responsible for identifying and addressing student needs; developing and delivering activities and programming; completing a variety of administrative tasks; and as applicable, supervising student staff. The incumbent is expected to demonstrate a commitment to the work and mandate of the Residence Life Office by fostering academic achievement, individual student development, and community-mindedness, as well as being positive role model for young adults. Residence Coordinators are on-call and respond to student concerns, including mental health issues, sexual harassment or assault, or conflict. It is a position of trust and requires the incumbent to exercise sound judgment, possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, and be capable of working collaboratively with the residents and other members of the university community. The work of a Residence Coordinator is almost exclusively carried out during the evenings, Monday to Friday, from 5 : 00 p.m. to 9 : 00 a.m., and on weekends. Residence Coordinators are subject to supporting duties at other Memorial residences, depending on schedule and demand.

Qualifications

An undergraduate degree, preferably in education, social sciences, or human services, is required; or an equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered. The ideal candidate will have experience with crisis response, conflict or issue resolution, and emergency management, along with excellent communication and sound judgement under pressure. The successful applicant will have experience living and / or working on a university or college campus. Experience in supervising or mentoring students and / or the development and delivery of educational programming for a diverse population, including young adults, graduate students, and families, is essential. Experience being on-call would be considered an asset. A Police Records Check with a Vulnerable Sector Query, from the local police authority, will be required.

SALARY $1,500 per semester plus accommodation (taxable benefit) and some amenities
